A few years ago I needed fuzzy search for my own e-com store. Vendors were way too expensive so I reverse engineered my own. Worked great for that one store.
Woke up past Christmas with the idea to just throw it on the Shopify app store. See what happens. Used Claude Code to build the theme app part and adjust my existing dashboard (integrated billing etc). Took about a week and got approved yesterday (few weeks later).
Control is obviously weak here. Shopify owns the channel, we all know how that can end (I read a good post about this on the forum). Entry is so-so, the reverse engineering work was already done years ago. Need is there -- plenty of search apps exist, my current strategy is undercutting them in price.
Important note to self: I run a B2B SaaS that's growing fast right now, that's my main thing. This Shopify app cannot get in the way of that under any circumstance. If it starts eating attention I'll automate it, sell it, or kill it.
Plan for now:
- add a better (commercially fit) video to the listing
- Get better understanding search algo on app store
- get some beta users from my network for reviews
- if all of above are checked: start with small ad budget to test traction
- talk with first users and re-iterate.
Future concerns:
- flip control? Extend to other markets: Wix, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, etc.
- flip need/entry? Extend features (deeper integration with GPT, whatever need customers might have)
App listing: Sellerzilla - AI search with typo tolerance, analytics, and merchandising | Shopify App Store
