This is a survey shamelessly stolen from http://andydrish.com/ to help me out with a thing.

I am starting a How to Write a Romance Novel tutorial series. It will be free. Sign up now for my mailing list if you want it! I want to build it kind of like Ramit Sethi's site, where tons of content is free and there are also premium courses you can pay for, blah blah blah. BUT I need to know the kind of audience I have for my site.

If you're interested in writing romance, or if you already are and just starting out, I will give you TEN(10) INTERNET HUGS for answering any or all of the following questions (feel free to give up halfway and just post half of the answers, that is fine, I know this is a lot of questions):

Desires – What is your dream scenario? If you could wave a magic wand and change your life, how would it look? What does ‘success’ look like to you?

Fears – What is currently holding you back? What is your nightmare? Your worst-case scenario?

Frustrations – What is frustrating you in your life on a daily basis? What triggers you? Pisses you off? What makes your emotions boil?

Heros – Who do you look up to online? Who do you trust? Why do you trust them? What do they symbolize?

Villains – Who do you hate? Who are your enemies? Why don’t you trust them? What do they symbolize?

Information Sources - Where do you go online to get information you trust? Where do you hangout online? Who do you associate with? What products have you bought in the past? Why did you buy them? Where you happy or sad with the result?

Hey Aubrey,

I poked around the site a bit, and I can tell you that it piqued my interest enough and I could see myself subscribing to something like this. As a new writer / publisher, why wouldn't I want advice from someone who had found success in only a couple years??

When I get home tonight I'll dive into these questions for you.

It would bring that much more realism and feeling to the story. When I write, I pull upon things that have happened to me and how I've reacted to those situations. While my characters may be nothing like me, it helps to think, "if that same situation happened to someone that had X characteristics, how would they have reacted differently from me? What would they do differently?" All of your experiences aid in writing. I never thought that my career jumping or having a spouse that cheated on me would be of any benefit... but they are! I call pull from all of it, even the bad.

My question would be.... what can a "course" offer me that a book can not? When ever I want to learn something new, I usually just head to Amazon for anything non $ related or head here for $ related topics.

Are you asking these questions (the original q's in the thread) so that you can address some of these challenges / issues in your course? I guess that is why I was wondering if you wanted answers as they relate to life in general, or as they relate specifically to getting started in writing romance.

I'm asking so that I have a better understanding of my potential customers... that's the goal, anyway! I'm guessing most people here look to free resources, or as you said, Amazon.

Having taken a few courses online, I think the best thing I get out of them is:
- accountability in the form of deadlines
- community with other learners
- personal assistance from the instructor

I hope to be able to offer personalized promotional plans and advice on self-pubbing eventually. This initial course will be free to get people motivated to write a great book

Okay, think I'm starting to get it...

I.... might.... be.... slow

Let me see if I understand.

You think your target market might be:

People that "want" to write a novel (specifically romance) but have never written a book before.
The course will provide motivation / accountability to write that first book?

Do you envision that your target market knows anything about the craft of writing a novel?

This is to build a community and provide free quality content to draw in viewers and build trust that I know what the hell I'm doing.
Future courses will be targeted towards promotional aspects - How to Write a Romance Novel (and sell it!), as well as doing catalog critiques for writers who already have a backlist. This is where I am going to be hopefully making some money I want to provide a solid guarantee - if you haven't made back your money in sales in the first six months, you get a refund.

I'm also going to be instructing a workshop course IRL at a local writers guild on the same topic, so I hope to beta test the material with them before putting it up online.

Now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I should do the catalog critiques, etc as I go to work alongside the course. Start with a few free critiques (which I've already done) and then up the price over time...

Wish I could keep my eyes open and read this thread tonight, looks fascinating. PM'd you my answers, but where did those last few questions that ATW answered come from? My answers to those are

a) I have no fear except after finishing something, and that's that it isn't as good as I want it to be. Doesn't hold me back, though.
b) always on the lookout for tips on anything to do with writing...some I take, some I don't
and
c) Yep.

and the two above those:
Dream scenario would be that I could write only half the day; these eight and nine hour days are affecting my health.
and
Yes, I've written two novels and several shorter fictional works and several more non-fiction works including a memoir of my daughter's lifelong fight with fibromyalgia. What was difficult before I discovered beat sheets was pacing the story properly as a pantser. I'm not very good at being a pantser. What was fun was everything else.
