Without swinging far left or far right politically, I think we've all become accustomed to absorbing the constant onslaught of blame for how our country has acted and is currently acting. Living in England for a year when I was 16, I traveled Europe with my family and got a real grasp of Europe's feeling towards the US.This happened to be when bush was in office, and center stage on the worlds chopping block. Being as I was the only american student in my entire school, I was targeted for most all ridicule pertaining to my country, I was constantly verbally assaulted because my countries president was the young George Bush. I was very patriotic at the time, and very ill-informed on ways to defend my country to these attacks, bit by bit my patriotism started to break, with each informational blow this continues even to this day. Now I fully acknowledge my countries faults, and even in some cases play around with the idea of conspiracy theories if they make sense. But I am a proud citizen/entrepreneur, and I love being given something to be proud of my country for, which is becoming rarer and rarer by the year.
So when I ran into a documentary which answered a serious question related to the morals of my country, and with a USA positive perspective, it was welcomed with open arms. The movie is: The World Without Us, filmed in 2008,and asks the question: What if the US withdrew its military presence throughout the world? You can stream it for free on Netflix.
Now I swear I'm not the girl on Facebook who just watched Kony 2012 for the first time and is gonna buy the Kony 2012 starter kit for $19.95. I'm just an American citizen looking for something to be proud of my country for, and as far as I can tell this Documentary gave me something to be proud of. Lately all of my thoughts pertaining to my country have been consumed with anger towards our society infected with ignorance, our government corrupted by greed, and our wealth squandered meaninglessly on bullshit like "The War On Drugs" (military spending aside, a view which has changed for me since viewing this movie).I remember being an innocent kid in Lincoln Elementary School singing those patriotic songs in the music room and feeling SO PROUD! so filled with emotion for my country that my eyes would water (there was one song they had to have us stop singing because so many kids would cry). I yearn to feel like that again, but all I feel is anger, having passed the sheltered innocence of childhood I'd been informed and educated. I remember being told stuff in high-school about the shit the government was doing and being like "there's no way our government would let that happen, someone high up on the latter would stop it" then feel like i'd been punched in my souls face when I realized there wasn't. I will always have an open mind though, so if you have reliable information which contradicts anything in the documentary, please let me know, I would love to hear another side of the story, what your feelings on our country are and how they have changed over time with the introduction of new information.
