I don't watch TV anymore but I do watch certain Youtubers who follow what is going on in the world. I try to avoid the "regular" media as much of that just pushes an agenda rather than simply providing the truth.

Anyway, I found this TED talk and it has made me want to seek alternative things to watch when I am relaxing in the evening.

Do you think watching the news can have a negative affect on the mind when it comes to trying to improve your life and start/grow a business?

“It is imperative that you learn to ignore or redirect all information and interruptions that are irrelevant, unimportant, or unactionable. Most are all three.”
– Tim Ferriss, The 4-Hour Workweek

I need to change my mindset because there are health issues in my life right now that I feel are dragging me down. I cannot walk away from them BUT I can try to make things easier on myself by fighting back with more productive thoughts. I want to start watching helpful/inspiring Youtube videos that focus on creating an online business however, most of the channels I find are run by internet "gurus" just trying to push their latest product.

I end up watching a 30 minute "fluff" video where very little actionable info has been provided in order to get me to purchase a course of some sort.

Can anyone here recommend good Youtube channels, teachers, or other positive sources to watch that provide helpful advice/inspiration/motivation...etc, that do not have some guru trying to sell me something?

I appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

I haven’t watched the news in about a year. I stopped because it was felt like a bombardment of negativity being thrown on me, without me being able to control any of the events they were showing. Much, much happier without it. If it’s not within my control, I’m not going to waste my precious time and energy acting like I can help the situation by feeling bad about it.

News can mess with your mind 100%

Stories are half true, or not true at all.

People will say shit to camera crews, just to get on the news saying they seen things they didn't, to have there 5 minutes of fame.

And media don't care, they just want a story that's it, if they don't have enough facts or the story isn't exiting they will make it sound more exciting.

By introducing fear, disaster or over exaggerate what actually happened.

I've had first hand experience with dealing with media and shit. It's laughable people take it as matter of fact.

The news is terrible. Lots of sensationalism and outrage porn designed to get you worked up into fear all in the name of getting clicks and views. I have a scan and "scroll once" rule...

I noticed a huge difference when I stopped watching the news. You will be more positive and get more done.

My theory is that as you focus less on things you can’t contol, I.E. conflict with Iran. And start only leaving mind space for things you can control. Working on your business. Making a call to next supplier or partner. You will create action momentum.

Atleast this is what happened to me.

One caveat is that I do like to stay informed. So I wish there was a way to find a curated weekly or monthly news.

More similar to how people may have read the news in the 1800’s very spark notes, and to the point on importance.

Living in a country where you don't speak the language makes it even harder to follow the news. I don't hear anything or anybody talking about the news in my home country and it's a huge relief. I'm not missing anything.

Ya one thing I love about traveling - you get to choose what is around you to “tune in” on.

When I go to America there are TVs in a lot of places blasting news, sports nightlights, reality crap. It’s very hard to ignore for most people I’d imagine.

When in Poland (or wherever) though there is just way less “noise” in public and everything is in Polish anyway. I can relax a lot more and not be bombarded with marketing and news every few minutes.

To OP - ya 100% cut out watching the general news. The only news to pay attention to is the things that directly impact your own life - and for that you’ll have to research the right sources and even then keep it to a minimum.

Yes you should stop.

But it can be pretty tough to do, since most news stories will get posted all around social media, so to disconnect from the news you will have to use facebook less.

Right now the news will have you thinking the world is ending, with wild fires, earthquakes, volcanoes, and possible wars, but the funny thing is, if you just disconnected from the news you would have no idea any of that was going on because it doesn't effect most of our daily lives.

I think political news is pointless. People spend hours of their day trying to be "educated" about a vote they make once every 2 years. They put all their hope in a candidate and government.

I realized that it was pointless for me to care when I had my good old Republicans in the White House, the House, and the Senate and they couldn't manage to cut taxes a noticeable amount without spewing socialist rhetoric.

I haven't voted since. I don't put my hope in government.

There used to be objective content on Fox news. I stopped watching them when they decided to go full bootlicker in favor of their brand of socialism vs another. Things like banning AI. For crying out loud. Why don't we ban tractors so workers have to hand pick fields while we are at it too.

What I watch now is CNBC during the day while working. A lot of good business content and you will still get the world events. They don't seem to have much of a partisan bias because they don't give the political stuff much airtime.

News is just a reality TV show these days. YouTubers are just trying to earn a living by catering to their audience while trying not to violate TOS so they can continue earning enough to survive.

The news cycle is too short these days. You could literally watch the news all day and never be caught up because it changes daily, sometimes hourly!

A lot of it is BS now anyway. They say one thing and then a few days later it is proven wrong or misinformed. How is that helpful?

I just want to know things after they happen. I don't care what the newscasters opinion is and I don't care what people "think" is happening or going to happen. Tell me whether the impeachment stuck or not. I don't need to know every detail of every minor update and speculation.

If you're asking what other YouTube channel you can waste time on I would say turn off YouTube and do something else. YT is a great tool for learning but if you're just seeking entertainment, then the news is perfectly suited for that.

I can't remember the last time I watched network news. Cable is just as bad; CNN is an utter joke and FOX ain't no better. All of them are merely tentacles of the rat-race system designed to keep people divided and entertained while fomenting opinions through narrative engineering. All of it keeps the right people in power based on the right conflicts and crises while the money flows toward the right entities and oligarchs.

If there were real journalists employed by a real media, 4 out of 5 members of Congress, both Dems and Reps, would be in prison.

IOW, news is a waste of time and tuning in is tantamount to a voluntary brainwashing.

You'll find more truth on YouTube from independent journalists who have no stake in truth other than their own liberty.

Haven't watched in ten years. Found that it has no impact on my life. Only made up stress.

However, it's important to note that there's two propaganda theories on news:
  • The news is used as a machine to brainwash you (to think like certain governments, businesses, etc want you to think).
  • The push to eradicate the credibility of the news is a means for governments to desensitize us to anything they do
My take: I don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I'm happier not watching than watching.

I do scroll Heavy.com just for headlines. They do a good job of prioritizing stories on the homepage without any media/editorializing for the most part.

I haven't watched the news in years, and have learned several things:
  1. If it's important, you'll still hear about it: Other people will still watch the news, and if it's important, they'll share it. It's a great way to filter out all the day-to-day stories.
  2. Most news is unimportant: I've never missed out on anything important from not reading the news.
  3. Better informed for elections: I personally always do research before elections. Not seeing the everyday news lets you see long-term trends more and really get the full picture. You're not lost in the trees and can see the forest.

I try to not watch the news, and I've blocked all major news websites on my phone. It's great. Whenever something important (or really funny) happens, people either tell me or share it on some groups I'm in.
And it it really negative, and really fake. And you don't miss anything.

I haven't watched the news in decades. My mother in law has it on 24/7 so when I go in to talk to her, I see it but I'd never turn it on. I do catch a headline or 2 on MSN or Yahoo! but I rarely read the article. And I have't read a newspaper since the 80's. I'm a real American and the only 'party' we have has nothing to do with politics.

With regards to what you said about the mainstream media pushing ideas that aren’t true, I couldn’t agree with you more. In order to compete with a lot of new smaller political channels they have resorted to HEADLINE EVERYTHING. If you have some health problems and watching it makes it feel worse then by all means don’t. I once heard a saying that if it’s big enough I will hear about it myself. Then you can do your own research.

If you want financial advice I strongly recommend the Graham Stephan show. I don’t believe in a lot of the frugality advice that he gives because it’s just Slowlane. But I believe he has a lot of great advice about finance and real estate investment.

Yes. Stop watching it.

I haven't watched the news for years, and am not missing out. When things blow up, I'll find out pretty quickly anyway, from friends or clients.

There's nothing I can do about the big stories. I'd rather focus my attention on stuff I can influence.

Fox News? Poison. CNN? Poison. MSNBC? Poison.

The 10 o'clock news on CBS? Go for it; although I've been disconnected for the past year and I'm doing just fine.

I just keep Reuter's and Associated Press in my RSS/Twitter feeds.

I stopped watching the news in 2014, I also stopped buying newspapers.

Basically I realised that paying attention to the news is akin to having someone come round your house every day, and tell you all the most depressing things happening in the world.

Would you hire someone like that?

There are lots of beautiful things happening in the world, yet the news does not focus on these things, instead it concentrates on death, rape, starvation, war and destruction.

Also, apart from being incredibly depressing, the news is fed to you by certain individuals or organisations with agendas. In other words it suits them to have you think a certain way. Maybe today they don't want you to like immigration, maybe tomorrow they want you to hate on the poor, or the rich, or the homeless.

Whatever suits their agenda, is how they'll present the news to you.

I live in the UK, and the mainly right-wing press are losing their shit at the moment because Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have decided they want to live a normal quiet life and are dropping all their royal duties.

This has made them angry, because they have been telling people not to like Meghan and they are not pleased to be losing their hate figure.

I bring up this particular example because somebody pulled up 20 articles in which they praised Princess Kate (Harry's brother's wife), yet denigrated Meghan for the exact same thing, example;

"Look at Kate tenderly cradling her baby bump."

"Neurotic Meghan can't stop touching her baby bump."

So, in conclusion, you don't need the news, 99.99% of what you'll read or watch is being shown to you for one reason or another, mainly to manipulate you into thinking a certain way.

Sure if you live in a country about to be attacked by a Western country then you probably should watch the news, or maybe there's a severe weather warning in your area, watch the news and find out if you can drive to your friend's place later.

Other than that, ignore it. Like I said at the top, I stopped watching the news in 2014, and it took about 3 weeks before I noticed that I was a happier individual. Of course I check in now and again, however even in the cases where it appears Trump and his cohorts might blow us all up, what am I going to do about it? Best to ignore it, maybe study after for historical merit.

If you want relaxing things to watch in the evening, type into youtube whatever you're into and voila! Your choice will be abound.

These are some of my favourite Youtube channels.

Mindsmash - Excellent martial arts breakdown channel

Mixed Molly Whoppery - Fighter history and psychology.

Alpaca Thesaurus - Fighter Psychology

MMA World - MMA news

Adult Swim - Nihilistic Cartoons

Super GT - Racing Channel.

Jimmy Broadbent - Racing Channel.

Ted/Tedx - Inspirational Talks.

Ultimate Fighting Championship - UFC News

Larry Wheels - Powerlifting/weightlifting channel.

Athlean X - Fitness Videos.

Numberphille - Mathematics.

Computerphille - Computers

Smarter Everyday - Science experiments

Veritasium
Veritasium 2 - Science experiments

Minute Physics - Physics concepts explained.

Yoyo Chinese - Learn Chinese (Mandarin)

Danny Maude - Excellent golf coach

Diverse Mentality - Hip Hop News

Darkmatter 2525 - Atheist cartoons

Voto Studios - Comedy Martial Arts

Enjoy!

TL; DR
Yes, you should stop watching the news.

It is because entrepreneurs tend to have a stronger internal locus of control. In other words, we focus on what we can change and ignore (or come to peace with) the things we can't.

If you can't handle the negativity, maybe don't watch.
If you do watch/read the news, watch the WITH and AGAINST and make your own mind up.

Most important thing is to try and disconnect after you do.
Meaning don't talk about the negative stuff unless it's very relevant to the convo. and continue living your life without thinking about the wars and destruction going around the world.
