Hi everyone, little disclaimer, I used chatgpt to help me write this since I'm not that good in English.
But I am following this eSports "drama" and it reminds me so much of the famous commandment of Control :
Most of you probably don’t follow esports, but this is a perfect real-world example of MJ’s Commandment of Control.
Riot Games runs the top European League of Legends league (the LEC). A few years back, 10 teams each paid tens of millions for a permanent slot. That slot was marketed as their asset: guaranteed participation, exclusivity, and a way to monetize through sponsors and media rights.
Fast forward to today — Riot just decided to invite a new team (Los Ratones) into the league… without the approval of the existing slot owners.
Here’s why that decision hits the teams right where it hurts:
Exclusivity diluted → if more teams can be added, the value of “owning a slot” goes down.
Revenue uncertain → sponsors pay for stable, exclusive exposure. If Riot can shuffle the lineup, that stability disappears.
Valuation drops → when the rules can change overnight, investors see the slot as risky, not solid.
No real control → these teams didn’t buy an asset; they basically leased prestige from Riot.
The business lesson: if someone else can change the rules of your game whenever they want, you don’t actually own an asset. You’re just renting it — and they hold the keys.
Never confuse access with ownership. Control is what gives an asset its real value.
