I've heard that Scrivener is amazing for the reasons mentioned above by @JustKris . If you're just starting out, you could also just use Microsoft Word (assuming you already have it on your Mac). That's what I use, and I haven't regretted it yet.

The hardest part is actually writing the book, regardless of the software. Good luck as you move forward!

I have plenty of experience with Word, but think I'll try out Scrivener just because it will let me rearrange ideas and throw in random thoughts as I think things through. Thank you again for your response!

Scrivener is the business - very widely used by authors. Very mature. Very powerful (especially if you self-publish eBooks - saves other apps/services to format for eBooks). Author is a great guy too. UI is getting dated but look past that.

BTW: make sure you DO use the tutorial - it'll take an hour but you'll end up pretty proficient and save that time in your first few hours of use (both in leveraging more of the power of Scrivener, and compared to trying to do some of the things in Word).

I've been using Scrivener now steadily (thank you for that recommendation). Every day I have been writing a few paragraphs and developing chapters. I am up to about 15,000 words now, and feel like I am just getting started. The more I write, the more new ideas pop into my head to bolster my objective. It's amazing how quickly the words add up with just a little bit of effort each day!
