Well, it's 10:13pm on a Saturday night, and being the smooth kinda guy I am, I'm in my store after hours working on it to prepare it for sale. I'm not homicidal anymore, but here's the story.
20 minutes ago, I was at the point where rage had overcome me in a manner akin to the "straw breaking the camel's back". Now, not only did I happen to smell like a camel (sweating like crazy after sorting and rewiring cables for the point of sale computer system and other electrical systems to make them look "nice"), but mine was the back that was broken by Quickbooks.
The store runs on Quickbooks, the point of sale terminal runs on QuickPOS, and after carefully labeling and moving about 40 cables, which I reconnected 100% correctly, QuickPOS pukes and decides not to work.
I do the following:
- Restart 10 times
- Swear loudly
- Call customer support: no-one there. It's 10pm on Saturday.
- Call premium tech support (I paid for this): no-one there.
- Call uber-premium tech support ($4.95 a minute): my phone company's automated message says I need to call them to connect this service.
- Call phone company. No-one there. Call back 9am-5pm M-F.
- Almost break phone.
- Almost bite off own finger.
- Calm down, pull out manuals and DVD installation discs.
- Attempt repair. All it does is uninstall and not tell me. %$#%
- Reinstall.
- Enter serial number.
- Scream when it asks me for an activation key, which I should have written in the manual.
- Scream when the key is not locatable in the manual.
- Error screen says not to worry: it will work for 10 days without a key. Sweeet.
- Next error screen: confirms this, but then says my 10 days are up. ^%$#.
- Out of luck, find the key inside a stupid little addition booklet to the manual.
- Insert key, program finally opens
- Error screens: printer won't work. Program still runs.
Now, the killer is this: the entire program refused to work because the receipt printer port was in use by something else which doesn't exist. Instead of turning the printer off, it makes the entire program (and my business) non-functional. F*ck me, an accountant and software engineer designing this together must have thought shutting a business down because of a printer problem is ok.
I need a life. If someone gave me shit 20 mins ago, it would have been the last shit they'd give someone for a while.
It's amazing how an idiotic problem caused by idiots can turn me, a calm and friendly person, into a rage-filled maniac in minutes.
#^%$ me.
<end bitching>
<end swearing>
Mods, feel free to kill this thread if needed, I just think I need a beer.
