I'm not sure if this is a question or a statement, but if anyone has insight/experience, feel free to share it would be much appreciated.
I briefly met with a software engineer/corporate board member from India today and he showed up with probably half a dozen bags full of new clothes. I asked him what he was doing with all of that stuff, and he briefly explained that buying clothing in his home city of Mumbai was at times 2x (TWICE) as expensive as the exact same or similar items for sale in Canada.
Also in his exact words: 'In India clothing is shit, and shit quality, and the middlemen are price gouging all the time.'
I know he makes over 6 figures per year (USD), so I'd assume he'd be living the high life when he goes back. (He's only in town to visit his local Canadian office for a week each year). But then I do some research and Mumbai is apparently an extremely expensive city.... I just don't understand. The craziest part is that he showed me one shirt that was MADE IN INDIA that he knew for a fact was more expensive in Mumbai than here in Canada on the other side of the planet.
And I don't live in some backwater small town, I live in a boom town city of over 1M people...
Not to mention the most expensive city on earth is the capital city of Angola... lol, what?
I didn't have time to ask him more because we had to part ways, but wish I had.
How do poor people survive in countries that are mostly poor to begin with if many goods and services are completely out of their reach financially? If more people had access to these goods (via lower prices), wouldn't the producers make more money?
I find this all fascinating.
Thanks for your time.
Edit: I understand why Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, New York City, etc are generally expensive... I just don't understand how cities in Third World/Developing Countries can command even higher prices.
