Tom at aptohosting has placed the new text on the home page. It looks good, in my opinion. His work is top notch. I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. I will take some time and share part of my marketing strategy. I doubt that I need to ask for feedback as I am sure I will get plenty.

So, here is what I am thinking. I want to create some buzz and create word of mouth pockets at various points around the country so that information about the site just doesn't eminate from one location but from many. Ideally, I could have someone from each of the 50 states and a few other countries as well. What I would expect of an associate/moderator is two fold: 1. Talk up the site to family, friends, around town and create some knowledge of the site. I think people will see some benefit whether it is ad-free, charity, or prizes. One of those angles should be appealing to many people. 2. I would expect the associate/moderator to help start the social community by becoming a member and a somewhat active poster whether it be blogging, posting picks, befriending some new users from their state, etc. I certainly don't want you to spend all day or night on the site. By all means, you should have a life.

What I would offer in return for the above: 1. A sliding scale commission on each subscription for your geographic locale (regardless of whether you talked to them or not) just for getting the ball rolling. This will not be a MLM commission type scheme. There will only be one person per state who would be paid like an independent contractor. The commission would begin at 50 members by Dec 1, 2008 and would pay at 10% ($2.50 x 50 = $125). For each 50 member increase the commission increases by 1% up to a total of 20%. This would occur regardless of the number of individuals who joined from your state (eg, 12,000 members x $5 = $60,000). As long as you stayed active and involved as a moderator to watch for inappropriate content and subscriptions are renewed, this would become residual annual income.
2. For those who live in smaller states, I would pay bonus money to those moderators if certain global targets are met so that it would benefit all even if they told friends or relatives who lived elsewhere. The idea is to grow the site quickly. 3. Finally, if the site has an IPO or a major investment over $50 million, 50% of the funds will be used for prizes, and 10% of those funds will be evenly split between all moderators. I want to reward people who help me grow this site.

bizboy-this is not a commentary on kidgas' idea, because I did not vote, I am not the target. That being said, there are many dumb business ideas.

Here is an example- I am going to invest 1,000,000 in a business that sells ice to eskimos, and I plan on charging $1,000 a cube. What a phenomonally stupid idea. I see stupid business ideas everyday.

Returning to an idea that I think Jscott gave you. You need a base of users to get the word out. I would think first 100k users get one year free, or something like that. Build an extra 100k users into your prize payout threshholds to compensate for this. At this point, you go to the site and ask yourself, is $25 worth it to be friends with the pleben princess? However, if I saw a vibrant community, and I was really into networking, and I got fedup with the myspace pornmarketing machine, then I probably join and try to bring my contacts over.

If this is considered spam, please forgive me and delete this post. I wanted to provide a small update on my social network and provide fastlane members with an opportunity.

I just started telling a few people about the site and will only be promoting by word of mouth. I know many here will not want to subscribe and I understand that. I did want to mention that the charity I have elected to support is the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (that was a question on another discussion). If a group of 25 subscribers want to support a particular charity, that can be arranged as well.

Right now, we have 5 paid subscriptions (all family members). My goals are modest. For the month of March I would like to sign up enough people to pay for the April hosting fees.

As for the opportunity...I wanted to mention that we will be having a NCAA bracket contest with cash prizes. There is no purchase necessary (ie you don't have to be a subscriber to participate), but you do have to register at the site. I will send out some info on March 1st to everyone who is registered.

I want to thank the forum for the comments from earlier which helped to clarify my thoughts regarding this project. I am looking forward to learning as I progress as will provide periodic updates.

Well, the wisdom of crowds proves more wise than this new web entrepreneur (I guess you could say that makes me green..). I have been reading Napolean Hill's classic and he talks about persistence and adjust your plan when the first one doesn't work out as well as you'd hoped.

Suffice it to say that logic has won the day, and I am thus offering free membership for at least one year to anyone from the fastlane who would like to join Pleben.com. I would only ask that you verify how you heard about Pleben when I email you, provide your full name on the information (so I can do our security check), and that you post a blog monthly (ie actually use the site).

I figure that if no one subscribes, I pay the hosting. If people join for free, I still pay the hosting but at least some use will come of the site. Thanks to all who have commented thus far. I will be going back and re-reading several comments as well as solicit input from those who join to see what direction to go from here.

Oh, and don't forget about the NCAA contest. I am still looking to have some fun with this.

Thanks,
Jim Tolley (aka Kidgas)

Why aren't you offering a free membership again? At least until you build a user database or draw attraction of some kind?

I meant to the general public or something that would expose it to more than 900 people.

mtnman,
I want the growth to be somewhat controlled. One of my complaints about myspace is that there is so little accountability (of what members are posting) due to its size. I think I would like to see a little higher standard of posting. I am motivated by the attitude of the posters on this forum and the standards that are upheld here.

Of course, I could be wrong. I am not afraid of learning or admitting my mistakes. That is not to say that if you know of individuals who would be a valuable addition to Pleben.com, they would not be considered. But right now, direct word of mouth is all I'm after.

The brackets are out!! Sign up for the contest at my site and I will send official rules. Payout is $1 per point minimum so you can likely win about $100. If this is spam, delete it. Thanks

So what happened? I notice that the site is deactivated due to non payment.

If you shut it down, can you share with us what you learned?

MJ,
First of all, let me say thanks for noticing. I am honored that anyone (let alone you) would take the time to visit.

Now to your question: I did choose to shut the site down (not due to non-payment as I don't owe anybody); it was by choice. I elected not to continue to spend $100 monthly for hosting the site that had little likelihood of achieving revenue given the amount of time I was able and willing to spend.

What did I learn?
1. The internet looks easy in concept, but is really pretty difficult. There are lots of people who make it look easy, but that is because they have a natural, given talent and desire. I learned the same thing when I played football in college for the first time. It looks pretty easy, but there are lots of intricate details that go into that apparent ease. My current vocation seems easy to me, but I would suspect might be difficult.
2. I should have spent more time researching the idea before implementation. More market research if you will. That might have altered the outcome, but likely would have altered the idea entirely.
3. I discovered that I should really have a passion for something if I want to devote time to it. I am passionate about my family (wife, 6 kids) and vocation. Between the two, the majority of my time is occupied. If I do get free time, I want to play golf, softball, or otherwise stay physically active for my health (mentally also). I just really couldn't add another time committment to my life.
4. I do feel that I grew. I contacted and trusted a web developer who provided a very good product. It is ashame that I couldn't put it to better use. (If I do something in the future, I will likely try to bootstrap a little more, however.) I do like the idea that I started with a concept and brought it to fruition. It wasn't economically successful, and I say so what. It certainly won't keep me from moving forward.

Those are some of the things that I picked up and can look at in the post-mortem. I'm sure I could come up with plenty of others, but I think that is a solid start.

100 bucks a month?! Someone was bending you over! Seriously.

I mean that as respectfully as possible. No user base, hardly any traffic = 100 bucks/mo

Not hardly.

That said, at least you went to work at it. You did more than most!

What a wonderful learning experience. The determination you showed from the start was great. I am very impressed that you had the presence of mind to back out when you decided you couldn't commit to the idea any longer.

Speed to you, my friend.

My question now is what's next for you?

Merkin,
What is next? I am still working on defining my "edge" using stock collars (see the thread of the same title). I am very pleased with my results thus far having only lost about 16% of my retirement portfolio in the stock market slide. This is better than one of my colleagues I asked about today who lost 40% (managed by a "professional"). I know that I made several mistakes during the learning process and feel I could be in much better shape. Still, I am satisfied with what I have learned.

My considerations become how to monetize the information I have accumulated. I don't think I am quite finished in that I would like to see whether I can get back to even in relatively short order. Then, I might feel like I am onto something having seen a decline and reversal cycle. That being said, I would like to see what happens over the next six months or so. Then, there are several possibilities I am mulling:

Write a book or otherwise disseminate information
Borrow from friends paying 10-12% interest and keep the difference
Offer advice for a fee (private consultation)
Newsletter format
Manage money (hedge fund, closed end fund, mutual fund, etc)

Each of these would have specific pros/cons and regulatory issues, etc. I am not to that stage yet. There would also be a time committment involved, but I am passionate about the topic and am increasingly convinced that I would enjoy it. So, that is what is next. Right now I am just managing my own money and trying to reaccumulate capital having learned from a few mistakes.
