How do pirate websites have enough money to stay online? websites like mininova.org, ninjavideo.net, thepiratebay.org (he's a millionaire)

The ads they have on there websites don't really pay out that much. How do they stay alive!?

ads that don't pay very much multiplied by a VERY large number of users = lots of money.

mininova.org is the 80th highest traffic website on the entire web (Amazon.com for example is 33rd - and this forum is 70,000th).

Make senses, but websites like problogger, johnchow have very very low traffic rankings, but there websites generate alot of money.

How is that possible?

Sorry for my ignorance :smxB:

but doesn't a website need a huge amount of traffic to make money in either?
Nope.

With niche marketing the magic number seems to be 200/day (expecting one of those to buy) multiply that times however many niche market websites... you get it. Add the viral effect of networking and it becomes even bigger.

how does a .org do that much in revenue, I thought they were supposed to be for non-profit businesses?

btw I imagine they, like real pirates, operate in Int'l waters(offshore hosting) so that they don't have to deal w/ the regulation that led the original(by this I mean first household name in the biz), Napster, to become a subscription site.

Certain types of content are more valuable to advertisers than others. A site like piratebay.com is going to bring in a bunch of users who probably aren't going to spend a lot of money on anything. They'll get mostly advertisers of free or very cheap stuff (think free smileys, free games, etc), while a blog that runs reviews on electronic gadgets has users who are interested in buying electronic gadgets. Gadget sellers will spend much more money to advertise their gadgets on this type of site. The gedget site will earn a lot more money per visitor than piratebay. Piratebay makes it up with lots and lots more visitors.

The same goes for John Chow's site -- the advertisers he gets are targetting webmasters with products like hosting and advertising programs, which tend to be on the higher end of the money-per-visitor spectrum.

Not to mention some of those guys that write for specific product categories can also promote items and be affiliated with the company selling them, making commissions off the sales.
