I was reading some articles about Pinterest - they were valued at 11 billion in march 2015 with a young/new monetization strategy. In 2013 they had a 3.8 billion valuation with no revenue but some potential monetization strategies. I understand the huge valuations with their incredible potential for advertising and the reach they have with their users, but how do social networks stay alive and scale so large with little to no revenue for so long?
