patenting a website

I came across a new site (launched two months ago) that has almost the identical idea as ours. They made mention that a certain process on their site is patent-pending. This made me wonder if we need to get certain aspects of our site patented, and if so is it possible to get an umbrella type patent for the whole site or do we need to just patent the different elements within the site?
