Hello everyone,
I finished reading TMF two weeks ago and WOW. It has left such a great imprint on me I cant even explain. Being 26, Hailing from New York with two immigrant parents, it was a real challenge trying to get them to see things from another perspective. Their thoughts and actions being centered around religion, working hard, learning a trade and retiring with a nice savings all sounded great to me when I was younger and enrolled in public school. It was what and how they were taught. They were just passing down those same lessons to me.
Fast forward a few years. All those views my parents had that I chose to take on were starting to fade. I had jumped into the trade career as a general laborer straight out of high school with not much consideration except that it would pay decent and in cash. That was the path I took for 5-6 years with a few odd jobs in between, until I started to realize something. I was living the life I "thought" I wanted and had listened to all the advice given to me by people I loved, but I was not happy. The typical questions emerged in me "Why am I even doing this?" "Is this settling?" "Is there more or is this it?" "Everyone else is happy doing this, maybe something's wrong with me?"
That was a couple months ago and boy did things change. My boss who had employed me for 5 years refused to give me raise when the topic came up. I was baffled and upset because I felt I did great work, always followed direction, was never late & went the extra mile. That was the last conversation we had and later on I realized I had put myself in that position. I had gotten very upset and was blaming HIM for MY choices. What an eye opener
A bit of a funk had come over me. Realizing that I wanted change but didn't know how to go about it was the first step. I knew I WANTED to change my perceptions of people, the world and the way I think and ideas. If the way I was living my life before was truly fulfilling me I would never have asked those very important questions to myself. The first step I took towards change was taking accountability and what a huge step it was.
I had stumbled upon TMF Forum a month before even hearing about the book. A few posts read later and a small order on amazon was all it took. I can not thank you enough MJ for the lessons you have passed on in your book. For my situation, I don't feel like the information I acquired would have come organically to me or from my surroundings and that's why I'm so grateful. I even talked my parents into picking up a copy and now they're reading it, ha. Thank you everyone and I look to share with you this new journey I set to embark on.
