I think that I kind of messed something up, not sure..I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.
I have a check for a couple grand coming in the mail. Here's the problem:
- The check is made out to my business name, which isn't a business (yet) - Let's say it's ABC Company
- I have not incorporated my business. I already have two LLCs and I was trying to move fast and get a customer before spending the money on incorporation.
- I wasn't thinking straight when I told the client to sign the check in behalf of ABC Company. I probably should have told them to put it in my name.
So can I cash the check? I did this a few years ago and I endorsed the back of the check. Nothing ever happened. But I don't want the IRS chasing me down for something like this.
I could always just hang on to the check and incorporate overnight I guess?
I don't really want to send the check back and ask them to sign it in my name. That would look unprofessional.
Any solutions? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. I must be the only idiot who has actually done something this stupid.
