My Internal Debate - Passive Income vs Building a Brand

I have been debating about this for a good month, with the holidays this past month I decided to make my time and think about what I want to do.

So here is the deal I can build multiple small sites that I am 100% sure I can create a sustainable passive income or I can develop my big site and create a brand.

Small sites passive income
Advantages
- I can create the sites quickly
- Simple creation means it can be automated rather easily
- I do not rely on one site so I am diversified, both niche and income wise
- Can work on this while retaining my 9-5

Disadvantages
- Requires multiple sites to make it work, which will require extensive book keeping
- Not building a business, can't really sell 1,000 different sites to liquidate

Build a big brand site
Advantages
- Can liquidate when it grows
- Building an actual business that can stand on its own
- Creating a quality site will fulfill me more (=more helpful to people)

Disadvantages
- One site, it either works or flops
- Complicated to create
- Upkeep for what I want to do will be complicated, only way to automate is by hiring people
- Afraid that I will not be able to keep up with the growth but it will not be making enough money to quit my job

So, what are people's thoughts on this? I am enamored with building my big brand site idea but if work makes me unable to keep up with it when the money is not there yet I am afraid of what might happen.

Part of me is thinking on building the passive income sites, then I can quit my job in about 1.5 years, have the passive income and then work on my big site...but maybe I am just scared of success?

I am getting ready to work on what MJ recommended when making decisions, the weighted matrix idea but I would like to get some input from others...perhaps more experienced people.
