Motivation and Validation Story

My intro here was a little vague, so I wanted to share some things with while I'm thinking of it about how this forum and the book have begun a transformation in my life. I haven't posted too much in an effort to avoid getting into too much BS, but I think this is worth it.


I graduated college early with honors at 21, had a slowlane job, and got "fired" ( told I would be fired when they had enough documentation on me) about a year after I started at the company on June 13th. Reasons: Poor execution and the inability to relate to my team. I take full responsibility for my screw ups and have since worked to correct them. I still think of my old boss telling me, while working on my day off tying up some loose ends, that a planned lateral transfer would be rejected and that I was on my way out. Thinking my best option was to quit, I turned in my keys and left that day, without much resistance and on decent terms, in exchange for the promised recommendation from him and the company for a new job.


I always thought of myself as an entrepreneur, hoping to make it rich someday or at least grind my way to the top of a company. My first thought was to say screw it and find a new job, hopefully in real estate since that was an original goal of mine. Sometime in the next couple weeks I was searching for real estate advice and stumbled upon the real estate investing section of The Fastlane Forum. That day marked a new beginning.
I gobbled up the information, bought the book, read the book, joined the forum and contacted my software developer friend to restart work on an idea I had in college, an idea that I ditched for the seemingly glamorous slowlane filled with long days, nights at the bar, and unfulfilled dreams.


From that point, I decided I needed to leave the slowlane and sidewalk behind. Turns out my partner kept working on the idea as I grinded at my job, and I'm grateful he hadn't completely moved on by the time I was ready to be back in.


I can't speak to any fastlane success yet as we are still building our website, and I may have to get a shitty part time job to help pay the bills soon, but I've made some big changes that were kind of validated tonight.
The biggest one was a self imposed ban on going to the bar with my friends to save money, time and prevent myself from becoming complacent. I realized I would be happier working on my business, teaching myself new skills, and of course lurking business forums instead.


Fast forward to tonight, one of my best friends birthdays. I finally showed back up at the bar just for tonight. It was a pretty decent night, I explained some of my new thoughts on life to my friends and the supported me for the most part. Also got buzzed for the first time in a while and had a great talk with my writer friend about how he needs to listen to his market instead of trying to win over agents.


At one point I stepped into the bar bathroom and a tear came to my eye. It felt great to be at the bar again with the buddies, but for me personally, I know the ban is still the best thing as it forces me to focus. I looked up casually from the urinal, saw a poster, and immediately zeroed in on a number on the poster: 1,000,000. It blew my mind! Here I was at a crossroads (in a stupid bar bathroom!) and my past converged with my future. Seeing the number 1,000,000 validated everything and made me realize "yeah, you're doing the right thing, keep it up!" (Disclaimer - It was actually a lottery poster LOL)


As you can probably see from this long post, I'm pretty pumped! TMF and CENTS has been better for me than 3 years of business education and being told to do what I love my entire life and other crap. I keep learning and executing my project every day, fine tuning my engine for a journey on the fastlane. As I mentioned, I don't currently post too much but I can't express my gratitude to MJ really everyone here who posts for the invaluable information I've learned so far.
