I am an English teacher who works with clients individually, one on one.
This allows me to work four hours a day, six days a week, and make more money than I used to earn working nine to five. I also truly appreciate it, since it allows me to network with people, make use of my knowledge and formal education. Even if, to some, it doesn't sound as appealing as another SMMA, dropshipping, or flipping venture, I wouldn’t exchange it for anything else when it comes to the balance between self-fulfillment and profit.
However, there are several drawbacks to this business model—obstacles I need to figure out how to overcome ASAP if I want to stop being a sidewalker. There are several solutions to these, which I’ll also point out.
Any advice is more than welcome—please feel free to criticize or suggest your own solutions. I would deeply appreciate it.
1) People take breaks from learning during the holiday period:
This is understandable, as very few people continue learning throughout the whole year. However, it results in me suspending any business activities every July and August, and forces me to spread my ten months of earnings over twelve months.
My theoretical solution: organizing holiday language camps, where people could combine education with leisure—a holiday break in a resort away from the city, while at the same time learning English. My idea would be to impose certain rules, e.g., a ‘compulsion’ to communicate only in English, as well as offering lectures and one-on-one consultations.
2) Clients are either adults working nine to five, or school students - both groups cannot physically attend English classes in the morning hours.
This leaves me doing nothing until the afternoon; my schedule usually begins at 4 p.m. and ends around 9 p.m. I need to figure out how to make use of the free time before 4 p.m.
My idea was to educate myself so that I can work with companies whose employees need English tutoring for professional purposes. I remember when I used to work in corporate, we had the opportunity to take part in English classes during working hours. This would be absolutely perfect, since it obviously would not conflict with my private clients attending lessons in the late afternoons or evenings.
On top of that, I am working on a course, parts of which are currently available to my students for free, but once it is complete, I am going to sell it as an online product. This would also help fill the income gap, though it is not a direct solution to any of the above issues. It has the potential to solve the problem of exchanging time for money, but it is still a distant matter.
Any advice is more than welcome. I appreciate your time and help.
