Launching a website without having trademarked it

I had a question about trademarking or copyrighting a website, so I'd appreciate it if anyone who was knowledgeable about the subject contributed. If I register a domain name and build a site, but don't currently have the money to trademark it, should I wait to launch it until I have the money to trademark it with the government, or am I protected by the fact that I own the domain name and therefore anyone who tries to trademark it will have a weak case.
