Hey, I'm Nolita from Vancouver, Canada. I'm 23 and have recently begun my journey to becoming unscripted. Reading TMF entirely changed my outlook on the world and has made me realize the crazy potential out there which has encouraged me to shift away from the slow lane path I was on. I'm in my last year of my bachelor's degree in environmental science and while I still hope to contribute to positive environmental change in the future, right now I'm hella determined to learn more from everyone here and start making my own fastlane moves. This year I aim to gain a lot more knowledge and find an idea/problem worth building a business around. I also aim to make some more friends and connections with like-minded people as my friend circle is literally 3 people who are not hungry for success like I am . I can tell there is SO much valuable information on here and reading people's success stories is so motivating. I hope one day I'll be sharing my success stories as well :smile2:.
Cheers, Nolita

Welcome to the forum!

I'm in my last year of my bachelor's degree in environmental science
Free idea: I recently had to help fill out a stormwater prevention plan for my family's business. Talk about a pain in the a$$. I'm sure you have some expertise with that kind of thing from your degree work, and every brick and mortar business needs to have one of those (I think). Now they're usually done by pricey engineering firms, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to be an engineer to write one up.

Thank you for the welcome and the idea! I will definitely look into it. It would be great if I could use my degree in some way towards building a business.

Why not build a business based around environmental science? After all, it's what you're studying now.

Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

Great field to be in, lots of opportunity here. And regardless if one believes the global climate debate, it doesn't really matter. As long as governments and citizens push for better environmental options, the need will be there.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome Nolita! At a recent startup pitch I was on, the CEO said that the global market will go towards all the environment/fair trade businesses, not because of moral reasons, but because they'll end up being the most needed and hence the most profitable.

I guess since I've started my degree I've always believed that you can't become rich in the field of environmental science and so after reading TMF and other books I haven't considered at all that an environmental based venture could go fastlane but thinking more about it there probably are many possibilities. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks for sharing this insight! The thing is that most environmental based/fair trade businesses are small/local scale without big intentions to expand or franchise as they aren't really interested in becoming rich. The challenge would be to select an environment related issue that can actually be solved in a way that roughly meets the CENTS criteria and provide impactful value to people and the environment. Maybe targeting a specific niche such as businesses with strong environmental initiatives would be a good place to start looking.

That particular startup was about a crowdlending platform for farmers in developing countries. The premise was:
1.There's too much money lying around in developed countries (that's why bank deposits offer such low interests)
2.These farmers usually don't have access to credits, so local loan sharks charge interests of more than 50%, even 100% in some cases.
3. A global platform, a crowdlending app, could use this unbalance to benefit both the farmers, who would have access to loans at much lower interest rates, and the small investors, who would get high returns from these loans.

So as MJ puts it, the imbalance that big corporations generate, that the system generates, is what creates opportunities for smaller entities.

If you want to check it out, this is the startup page:

Solve the plastic/waste/emission/power problem by any degree and you will make a lot of money.
