Hi All,
I'm considering starting a mobile knife sharpening business and would love some feedback and thoughts on pursuing this opportunity. Mainly, I'm wondering what other people's thoughts are when it comes to scaling this business? I was running this business through the CENTS framework earlier and I couldn't tell if I was being too harsh and conservative on the idea, or if there really is limited upside potential for this business.
As I've mulled it over, I envision starting off with sharpening knives, tools, etc. residentially because homeowners and occupants don't have this service as readily accessible to them as, say, a commercial business (restaurant, salon, etc). I also see residential customers as being a much faster avenue to getting first sales and building up a local name and profile within the community and online. After creating a baseline reputation, I would think pursuing commercial clients would be the next step to start obtaining recurring revenue. I was also thinking that residential customers may have an interest in subscription-based sharpening, but this would obviously be at a significantly slower rate than commercial businesses.
However, my main concerns were how easily this business could realistically be scaled into something bigger and, ideally, sold off. I'm aware of companies like KnifeAid and similar mail-in services. My current thoughts are that those business models would be the ultimate end-goal, in terms of creating a sustainable and automated business. Of course, this would mean at some point there would be a transition from mobile knife sharpening to setting up a brick-and-mortar/warehouse operation and going strictly mail-in.
Just curious for sound boarding and if this business is something that has true potential, or if it's more likely that it would end up becoming another version of a job. Any thoughts or feedback are genuinely appreciated! I've done a bit of research into this business already and didn't see a whole lot for people or businesses that have scaled this outside of something like KnifeAid, etc.
