Every morning, when I go to the refrigerator, I look at 26 magnetic letter blocks that my 4 year old uses to spells various words. We actually have two sets (one on each refrigerator door, coincidentally) so he can build larger words.
About a week ago, the "H" went missing- you can guess the lamentations heard after that from my child. I asked the wife how much a new letter set would be- and she replied "Usually 20 bucks or so, but I'll take care of it."
Just two days ago, I see- lo and behold- the "H" has been replaced! Obviously- there was much celebration. When I wondered out loud where the rest of the letters were- my wife replied "Oh, I just bought one for two dollars on Ebay- well, I guess three with the shipping. I really should have just went to the thrift store, and bought the whole set- I can usually get it for two or three bucks, but I just didn't have the time."
I did the quick math in my head, and realized that if we just got our hands on just 3-4 sets- for 6-8 dollars- we could probably make some money out of it. It wouldn't be hard to "thrift it out" as it were, since my relatives are thriftaholics, and pick up things all the time.
I realize that this is not "fast lane millions" in the sense of the money being made- but those little "light bulbs" flashed a few times for me:
1. People are willing to pay a premium for convenience and speed, especially with kids
2. Ebay as pretty much everything
3. You can make more money from the parts as compared to the whole, and....
4. Sometimes you wake up to money ideas staring you in the face even before breakfast
