Joining a Committee

I hope this is the appropriate thread to ask this question....Has anyone here ever been on a committee? This was recommended to me by the local chamber in order to show I support my community. It is a good idea, but I am totally ignorant. I never thought of doing this, but would be interested in a cause that I would like to make a difference in, such as heritage or animals or the annual 'Trail of Tears' bike ride in my town. I know I don't look indian at all, but believe it or not I have Cherokee and Seminole. Any thoughts on how to go about this? I have researched that obviously you need to contact the committee you are interested in and maybe go to a few meetings to see if it is something you have the time and energy for, as all of them are different in that respect.
