I hope this is the appropriate thread to ask this question....Has anyone here ever been on a committee? This was recommended to me by the local chamber in order to show I support my community. It is a good idea, but I am totally ignorant. I never thought of doing this, but would be interested in a cause that I would like to make a difference in, such as heritage or animals or the annual 'Trail of Tears' bike ride in my town. I know I don't look indian at all, but believe it or not I have Cherokee and Seminole. Any thoughts on how to go about this? I have researched that obviously you need to contact the committee you are interested in and maybe go to a few meetings to see if it is something you have the time and energy for, as all of them are different in that respect. Can anyone shed more light and offer tips? Thank you! I hope you all had a Merry Christtmas!

Requisite disclaimer: I haven't been on a committee, so I don't speak from a position of personal experience.

I'd go to the meetings first, to assess how much the group actually gets done. Being on a committee doesn't seem like an impactful way of helping the community; rather just a way to make political connections and stroke one's ego.

I missed what business you're in, but perhaps one thing you can do is add a "social component" to your business. Donate a portion of your revenue / profit to a local charity / shelter / whatever, directly.

Thank you! Just trying to get my name out there. I felt committees probably were part of the political realm. Maybe, I am seeking to become a board member of an organization I care about, but time would definitely be a factor also. I am ignorant in all this too...maybe there is a fine line between a board member and a committee member. I'm just trying to volunteer some time in hopes it creates networking opportunities and gets my name more widely known in my area. I know this may not be the best way to go...just something recommended to me, but not sure I even have the time or if this is a focus that is worth my effort right now. I am a bookkeeper/individual tax preparer.
