It doesn't even have to be Google. You pretty much go into the address bar of any browser and it just gives you information. Even Bing or Yahoo! can answer the questions.

When any of my friends have a computer issue, they ask me, I spend about 20 seconds on Google or other search engine, and one of those is bound to help explain or solve the issue.

I still ask people questions from time to time, though, even if the answer could be found on Google, but these fortunately aren't very often.

Oh... and...

Google hot key is awesome (on the chromebook) and Google Play store with movies, TV shows, and apps.
But no Skype :(:(
Do they have a substitute? <---- Never mind, just used Google

I've kept it a secret for a year and a half now, but why not haha. Maybe it'll inspire someone to do something as well.

This screenshot I just took should be sufficient proof.

If you have a Microsoft account, you can "sort of" use it through the Outlook email page. You need a plugin / addon in order to do video / voice calls, if I remember right.

While I believe that @GrumpyCat is telling the truth about this and I have a lot of respect for him based on his actions... I just want to highlight how easy it is to fake an image like this:

Ever since Microsoft introduced that thing where I have to update my password ever 30 days and confirm my identity with another account, I've almost completely stopped using my account altogether. All my emails are with Google now. I gots sweg m8

The single most infuriating thing in my life is when people accuse me of lying. I know you're not exactly doing that, but anyway. Anybody here that's on reddit want to send JamesF4 an inbox message? I'll reply in 10 seconds and end any doubts.

yep.webp

@GrumpyCat I was not accusing you of lying. Sorry that you took it that way, it was not my intention to infuriate you.

I don't have a reddit account (edit: just made one). I believe though.

[HASHTAG]#trustbutverify[/HASHTAG] was apparently the biggest lesson of 2014 for some users here.

Anyways, I am curious though. @Mr.B did you use Photoshop for that? That was pretty quick.

Nope, just changed stuff in my browser. Only took a couple of seconds.

WANT TO KNOW WHAT IT IS??????????

Google!!!!

Time for the rant,

I swear, the amount of ridiculous questions posted here that can be answered in less than a minute is astounding.

We live in a period of human history where even the poorest people (in developed, and even most other countries) have unlimited access to all of the knowledge ever amassed by humanity.

Google is like having an entire army of fact checkers and personal assistants at your beck and call. And for free!! You don't even have to pay them, what a brilliant concept! You can find out anything there is to know about everything, and in fractions of a second.

Don't speak english? No problemo!!! It covers every major language in the world! Incredible! 😀

Previously, what were the options? Go to library? Shit, that involves leaving my house. What about before libraries? Ask the elder of the village? That guy was a jackass, I never liked him.

I have a world map above my desk. I see what appears to be a group of islands near Antarctica called 'Shag Rocks'. Never heard of them before, and I know nothing about it. Guess, what, in 30 seconds I'm going to be an expert. BRB!

I'm back! 'The Shag Rocks are six small islands in the westernmost extreme of South Georgia, 240 km west of the main island of South Georgia and 1,000 km off the Falkland Islands.' That's knowledge baby!!!

Disturbing. Girl in vid looks like my ex gf lol

While I very much agree with the original post, I think there is another side to this. Most answers I do Google first, but that doesn't always mean I get the answer I want. Sometimes I do get the answer I want, but I still want to interact with higher quality people on this forum. After all, I spend anywhere from 18 to 20 hours a day alone in a white room with no one to talk to but my cats.

It's not like these questions take a significant portion of our day. Look how many people took time to respond to this thread, and where the topic has gone. Sometimes people just want to read words that directly respond to their question. Sometimes they just want to feel like people too.

I both agree, and disagree with OP. I guess in this case, it's the context that matters.

Is the person not googling the answer because they're lazy, or is it for some other, deeper reason?

Cannot agree more with this. Apart from the fact that it's just annoying, the real problem is that it easily pisses off members that have a lot of value to share. Their time is valuable, so let's respect it.

In my experience, most people don't know how to use google properly. It takes them ages to find what they are looking for, just because they never made the effort to think about keywords and efficient google usage.

Anyone feel like sharing their best Google hacks?

You're right, context is important. The original post is addressing only the questions with black and white answers. Idiotic questions that make it clear they haven't looked anything up and just want others to solve their problems. There are plenty every day.

Or 'Is this fastlane?'. I hate that question.

Hi could you pm me details of how to access google thx.

Anyone feel like sharing their best Google hacks?
  • Find sites similar to a website you already know using related: (e.g. related:alibaba.com)
  • Search for a particular file using filetype: e.g.honey badger filetype:gif
  • Limit search results to a particular site using site: e.g. hustlers site:thefastlaneforum.com
  • Search for keywords only in titles using allintitle: (e.g. allintitle:Incredible Fastlane Resource)
  • Search for products in a certain price range using .. (e.g. Lamborghini $100000..$150000)
  • Use a wildcard to specify an unknown or variable word (I love it when companies send me *)
  • When looking for an exact phrase, use quotation marks (e.g. "There is no spoon")
  • To eliminate results that contain a word, add a minus (e.g. matrix -mathematics)
  • To search for pages that may have one of many words, use OR (e.g. millionaire OR fastlane)
  • To return results that contain all the words, use AND (e.g. millionaire AND fastlane)
  • Search for terms only in the URL using allinurl: (e.g. allinurl:fastlane millionaire)
  • To search for pages that link to a certain page, use link: (e.g. link:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/)
  • To get quick access to information about a site, including cached pages, related pages, pages that link to the site etc. use info: (e.g. info:alibaba.com)
  • To help discover popular alternatives to a product, type the product name and vs and see what autocomplete comes up with (e.g. moleskine vs )
  • If you come across a paywall, try using google translate to get around it. Enter this url http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=&sl=la&tl=en&u= followed by the link you want to access (e.g. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=&sl=la&tl=en&u=nytimes.com)
  • Search for a result in a specific time period using a url hack. First, search for something, then add &tbs=qdr: to the end of the url with the time period you want the results limited to. h1 is the past one hour, n10 is the past 10 minutes, s30 is the past 30 seconds etc. So for example, this https://www.google.com.au/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=amazing idea&tbs=qdr:n10 will show results for amazing idea from the past 10 minutes.
  • Oh, and if you want to entertain young children for a second, type Do a barrel roll into Google.
The beautiful thing is, the above tricks can be combined to really narrow down your search results. If you're into that kind of thing.

Or how about if you don't like a question then don't answer it instead of bashing people?

Huh. I haven't seen that yet, myself. I haven't been asked to update my password, and I've been using it for about a year now. I am going to be changing it soon, but it's not because Microsoft suggested it.
