What a brilliant book I've just read! Going through a second read too. I always wanted to draw and perhaps be a commercial illustrator, so I went to artschool with no research or purpose. It was encouraged, but it wasn't free. I saw many warning signs but did not bail. I did not understand what I was getting into and I did not receive what I was hoping to get out of it. For me to explain what happened would be a lengthy story. I will just say that after I graduated, I stayed with this dream for too long without fully immersing myself with the required dedication to be "exceptional" at being a commercial artist, on a professional level.
So the book brought me to the forums. I noted my favorite chapters. Chapter 30 in particular, this is the one chapter that opened my eyes to a flaw I didn't know I had. I kept pursuing this dream of being an artist with no plan or reason why I wanted to be an illustrator. And I feel like that was my selfish approach to whatever the hell I was doing to my life. I had no goals either, I've been on an aimless path, it even showed itself in my work, incomplete artwork, exhibiting even in personal sketchbooks, there was no way in hell I was going to make it as a pro. I wasn't helping anybody with my art either, it was all self-serving. The mentality of quitting was even more excruciating. Quitting was unfathomable. I couldn't let it go.
That is why I love those later chapters talking about path changes as well. I can calm down and release my bite. The book helped me understand and change my mental approach about all of this. Helped me understand what I need to do. I believe my approach was flawed. Like it was written in the book. And that alone is something I've been needing in my life.
So my new goals, not exactly original, but I would like to start a web design business. I have a part time job that is keeping the loans paid, and that gives me plenty of time for self-study. I'm using freecodecamp to learn. I used to write personal .lua scripts for a game I used to play so writing webdev code is very familiar to me. I know in my area there are plenty of businesses, a lot of them either don't have websites, or are just using really basic unprofessional looking layouts. Perhaps i can learn to be a competent salesman in this regard. Slow steps, even if I only make $1 a month. Long term goals? No idea yetBut I'm so relieved, you have no idea. When I am financially independent, I will spend my days drawing whatever the hell I want. Anyway, thank you MJ for writing the book and forgive the lengthy post.
Edit: Good point by the gentleman down there. And it's cool. Forgive that previous post. I have done this a lot. Starting again.
I am Tuko from New Jersey, I work manual labor in a warehouse. I am in debt from school. Honestly? ...and there is no sugar coating this. I am of no use to anyone! But I want to change that right now. I have already made some minor steps to change my situation and I am seeing some results.
Because this is a new world to me, I am trying to figure out what path I will take to reach my current goal. Getting out of debt. I have an aptitude with computers and working as a freelance website designer would be the first step. Distantly, I was thinking about the 3D printing world, it's a new and growing industry and I know there are opportunities there.
I want to pay off my parents debts and mortgage and definitely buy a nice car for each of them. For my only nephew whom I love, I'd like him to go to college on my dollar. For myself? I just want a Subaru Impreza and a house in a quiet neighborhood hehehe. And time to work and publish my own comic ideas in my own studio.
I know you guys can help me and guide me to do this. I plan to make a progress report in a month. Thank you for taking the time out for reading all of this.
