HI All

Here in my country, the festive season is going on. The biggest festival of the year is going to celebrate next week. Markets are full of stuff and shoppers.E-commerce companies (Amazon, Flipkart etc) are offering heavy discounts and offers Big Billion Days, they are trying to break there previous records of sale in this festive season.

While on the other hand traditional Retail B&M businesses are not that much enthusiastic because of declining sales figures. They are blaming E-commerce companies for the decline in sales of retail businesses. Now the retail business owners opposing the e-commerce companies. In one of the state which is considered wealthiest in the country retail business owners association decided to oppose e-commerce companies and what they are doing is they are ordering expensive goods & stuff such as gadgets, electronic appliances etc from online platforms and when the order came to deliver they are not taking the deliveries. According to a news source goods worth of 1 billion dollars is not claimed or deliveries not taken.

What I am thinking is that if this conflict between E-commerce companies and Retail B&M businesses can provide some new opportunities.

So what I am asking is;

1. Is a genuine problem here?
2. Is this problem can be solved in a form of new business (or idea)?
3. Is this just another disruption that passes without changing anything for both the parties involved?

I think it is a little like 3 however it will only change one party, the B&M companies. Because, unless they rethink their business strategy, they will die out like the dinosaurs.

In all fairness it's not like eCommerce came out of the blue. We have had 20 years to get used to it, embrace it and adapt. Any B&M who has had their head in the sand this long deserves to perish.

The best opportunity I see is someone going round all these B&M businesses’ and selling them the book Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson.

A short sinopsis here:

This is interesting because that is the field I am in. I'm wondering on how to actually add value to customers' lives so that they come to our stores. Interested in this thread.

Ever asked yourself what would happen if e-commerce giants opened physical stores and challenged existing physical retailers whilst still holding a massive footprint in the virtual world?

The answer is pretty straight forward, as @RazorCut put it, they'll "perish". This is already slowly happening with Amazon Go (Read more here).

So to answer your questions:

  1. For physical retailers, yes. So you could propose something to them. For the average customer, no. E-commerce is already helping them out.
  2. Yes, by starting your own e-commerce store, you can help the internet movement force the closure of physical retailers faster.
  3. Sort of. You're right in saying "just another disruption that passes", however, you're wrong in saying "without changing anything for both the parties".

It is another disruption that will pass but it will indefinitely change physical retailers by slowly stealing customers until they can't survive any longer on profits.

I'd suggest tapping yourself on the back for your own potential idea and for picking up on it, however, I wouldn't really say there's anything that can be done.
