Hello everybody,
I'm not usually active in forums or social media in general. But after reading through some of the forums here and MFL, I've decided to take a chance here.
As of today, I am 18 years old and just graduated from high school with my AA. At the time being, I have decided not to go to college and instead got a job as a Sales Rep for a reputable company. From the very beginning, I told myself "If a college won't pay me to go, I won't."
I don't necessarily have a plan at the moment, but I've always enjoyed entrepreneurship. During middle school/high school, I built up my own lawn mowing business - I had about 10 clients every week while I balanced college classes and another part time job. Did homework for other kids as a side hustle too. Albeit, I've also had failed businesses as well. The biggest one to date was a Selfie-Ring Light drop shipping business that I invested wayyy too much in.
Right now, I'm working on something bigger than I ever have before. During high school, I wrote a research paper on an experimental type of technology. I don't know if I should get into too much, but I managed to recreate something that cost $1200 into something that cost me about $50 to make. The problem is, it needs more development. I'm saving most of the money from my job until I can find a laboratory or college that can provide me with the equipment and knowledge that I need to make a minimum viable product (MVP). So far I've emailed about 9 different colleges/institutions/professors with plans to find more.
Another problem I think I'm going to run into is competition. So far, there is 1 company in China beginning to produce it. This isn't something I'm too concerned about, because I have ideas of going into directions that I don't believe they are. However, they do account for approximately 30% of the field I want to get into.
I don't have a formal company or trademark/patient yet, mainly because I'm still learning about basically everything and my design isn't something that could be patented just yet, but I think I'm close. Would anybody have any advice on where to go from here? Are there any of you who have developed some sort of scientific product before?
Also, thank you @MJ DeMarco. I've read a few books on entrepreneurship, but not a single one provided me with as much knowledge as you did in MFL. I read through the whole thing in a day and a half. I'll most likely end up reading it again. I've always wanted to take this route, and yours words help me formulate my goals into something that sounds extremely achievable, plus you brought me here.
I can't wait to read and learn from all the stories this forum has to provide. Thank you everyone.
