What do you guys think about the importance of your Instagram username.

Would your name or a key phrase in your username better for organic growth?

@firstnamelastname
Or
@digitalmarketingmatt

I’m reading a book on Instagram right now and the author is saying to use a username that would be found while searching. Obviously I’m not a celebrity or public figure (yet...ha) so people won’t be searching for my name.

Thoughts on this?

Just quick reply:
If you'll go "@digitalmarketingmatt" your name is bound to "digital marketing"
If you'll go "@firstnamelastname" you could go in any direction (in the future).

So i'd stick with full name.
Unless you really want to be digital marketer forever.

I would go with including the keyword in the username so long as the example was similar to what you used in your post. I am currently using Instagram to find accounts in a certain niche and it’s much easier to find them (and instantly know what they do) when they include the keyword in their username.
I would consider also using an alternate keyword in your name so long as that keyword is very similar. For instance Matt Steinman - Marketing Expert

stick with full name.

You can change your username whenever you want

I own and use a few one word original names and find it peaks quite a bit of interest.. Couple examples: @fake and @graph

Didn't know that.

But still, the name change could confuse users. I'm not big fan of changing brand name...
