When it comes to freelancing for businesses, I think it is all about solving problems for the customer as opposed to showing off the technical side. I get this is a given, but sometimes people just don't get it. You have to be able to show to non data scientists how data brings value to their business, and they want concrete examples. At least this is my experience. It can be frustrating to work with people who don't know data, I assumed it would be easy because I am the one with all the knowledge. But business orientated customers have one goal-improving their ROI, and if you can't show them how they can do that excatly with what you do, i.e. machine learning, so they aren't interested.
