Multiple books that I've been reading plainly state that icing an injury such as a sprained ankle is now considered a bad idea --- that it delays healing and in nearly every case provides no tangible benefit other than pain relief (at the cost of delayed healing). Apparently, even the inventor of the 'RICE' acronym Gabe Minkin revised his original position and co-authored a book on the subject, and major sports team have started updating their practices as well.

The new paradigm is apparently that inflammation is necessary for healing -- though inflammation can also occur without healing, but healing cannot occur without inflammation -- and thus in almost every case it should not be interfered with. However, swelling is a side effect of this critical process, and swelling can be reduced by activating muscles around the affected area -- whatever can be done without pain -- thus draining the waste products.

This makes perfect sense to me and aligns with my experience. Still odd that something apparently harmful would be recommended as the treatment of choice. Of course, the same logic applies as to why NSAIDs such as ibuprofen delay healing.
(Note: an exception is when a part of the body is cut off; then you'd want to put it on ice to have a chance of reattaching it within a few hours.)

There are also issues with the other parts of the 'RICE' acronym; it has been recognized for some time now that excessive rest after an injury can be harmful as well, that it can lead to poor healing outcomes, and that in any case people tend to rest way too much.
