Most of my friends graduated from top undergrads.

They make $50k+ a year. Not a killing, but enough to have a comfortable life. Now here's what pisses me off:

None of them have any money. They blow it all on stupid shit, and don't even have $350 to fly to Florida. Housing's provided (mutual friend has condo on a beach), food's cheap. All they have to do is buy a plane ticket, booze, and food. Surprisingly, they can't afford that.

Why?

Well, here's where their money goes:
  • Taxes ($250 a week)
  • Food ($200 a week)
  • Partying - taxis, covers, bar tabs ($100 a week)
  • Housing ($200 a week)
  • Miscellaneous + stupid shit ($250 a week)

We focus a lot on this forum on growing wealth, however, we often gloss over proper money management. Of what I listed above, a person can easily cut down on Food, Partying, Housing, and Stupid Shit. Those are all instant gratification expenses, and ones that prevent us from living the lives we want.

My friends are trading 5 days a week, to pay for 2 days to forget about their weeks.

Then, once a year, they go to Cancun, and think that justifies their 51 weeks of quasi-slavery.

The thing they don't know is that these tropical paradises aren't that expensive: http://nomadlist.io. You can live in Chiang Mai for $380 a month. That's only $4500 a year!

You don't have to be rich to have a great quality of life. All you have to do is get your head out of your a$$, and stop being a slave.

In the coming month, I'll be traveling and working on my fastlane projects. I make only $500 a week from passive income, however, because I play the game differently, get to a live a life of perpetual vacation if I so choose. My friends on the other, well, they "can't afford to travel".

$500 a week isn't bad for passive income, man. There are people who work 40+ hours a week for that, so kudos to you!

I've known a lot of people like the ones you describe. Even when they start making money, they immediately flip on the "have more, spend more" switch. Hell, I used to be like that. One great thing that happened to me was being broke and unemployed, it dissociates your mind from spending on dumb shit (hopefully).

I've known a couple guys who would brag SO much about making all this money but have been getting personal loans from their friends for a while now.

Good luck on your journey, let us all know how it goes

Define "live". If no AC, a toilet that needs a bucket to operate, and sustaining off of rice and bits of pork = living...sure.

Well maybe you can do a bit better than that but you still won't be able to afford much.

Moving to the third world to live cheap is not what the fastlane is about, for me. It's not freedom.
It's bullshit for lifestyle bloggers. Sure, it's better than being a slave to the iPhone, but whatever. Still not enough for me.

No, but if you want to build an online business for cheap and you're not getting paid from it for awhile, combined with the fact you want to be out of a cubicle, it may not be that bad. Everyone is different and you'll never know until you try it. Personally, I'd love to travel around for cheap (but still have some standard of living--not shitting in a bucket lol) and make 30-50k a year while trying to think of something bigger. It is a long shot to make a successful business, so you have to enjoy life while you swing the bat. If it never happens, at least you enjoyed experiencing life and doing what you want instead of being a slave to where you don't want to be while having regrets. I am like you...I can't just jump to Third World and live off beans and rice for the rest of my life...but if that's what it takes instead of grinding a 9-5 and barely squeaking out a savings while being burnt out on energy every night around people loving the rat race, I'll do it.

I don't know what happened to NomadList. They seemed to halved the cost of living for nearly every location. Probably just trying to make it seem easier for the dreamers.

$800 minimum is required in Chiang Mai for a decent lifestyle. (1k+ if you want to party a few times a month)
