...I read a passage in a book the other day that has stuck with me ever since, "Most people consider themselves ready, willing and able to do something--the truth is that most of them aren't really willing." I've been thinking about this a lot, and in all the different facets of my life where my lack of willingness shows up.
I came to a realization last night that there are times where I am a flat our liar, and not at all good for my word--to myself. ...I don't know about most of you, but when I was growing up we gave our word on something. If we weren't good for our word, we weren't good for much. I am very careful when I tell people I will or won't do something, as my word is my bond--and I hate (HATE) excuses. So why is it that my word doesn't mean much when I promise something to myself? Every time I break my bond with myself it's over a lack of willingness to do or not do something.
So what does a lack of willingness look like? It takes the form of excuses, procrastination and sometimes is even clever enough to cloak itself in what appears to be common or good sense, "I'm too tired" "It's too late." "I really need to leave early, so I'll just double up on this tomorrow." "I don't have enough money (or it's twin cousin--"I have too much to lose." "It's too risky." "I'll do it later." "That would be foolish for me to try at this point."
Where does willingness come into play? Diet. Exercise/going to the gym. Starting things. Doing tasks well. Finishing things. Relationships/friendships. Sticking to your word.
So if you already know that you are ready and able, what are you now willing to start or stop in your life?
...And if you have become quite adept at keeping your word with yourself, by all means please write tips and tricks you use to keep yourself accountable and on track!
