I have recently decided that in the absence of a million dollar idea I should still take action to create a stream of passive income.

Honestly from what I've seen, running a successful forum is anything but passive.

Don't settle for less known system. Vbulletin is the standard. There are plenty of templates that can be purchased and then later customized. In fact, I do believe TFLTM was initially a template.

Google ads should provide some extra income, but you need to decide whether the payoff is actually there, as it usually annoys your users.

Building up sponsors is the way to go as far as building an income. Initially you can offer a business a trial sponsorship. The nice thing about this is that it creates legitimacy for other sponsors to then want to sponsor the forum.

Good luck

You talking something that will take years to create, those successful forums you are talking about have probably been around for years and had to have had a key to keep the user base around and coming back. It's a lot of very hard work.

:iagree:

I noticed that the ZeroMillion forums haven't really taken off, not sure if Ryan Allis is directly affiliated with it or not, but you need to find a market for the forums first, maybe MJ can chime in or I believe you can find out the origins of this forum from his thread: http://www.thefastlanetomillions.com/off-topic-discussion/20-why-i-left-rd-forums.html

The first forum I became active on was 3si, which is for 3000gt/Stealth owner/enthusiasts and this was back in Dec 2000(when I was your age... again, grandpa speak from the 24 soon to be 25yr old :p). Then it was already an active forum and I believe it's origins came from a failed 3/S based forum.

So with that in mind if you can think of an active forum then you can just as easily think of a big idea, in fact that post you had about what businesses need to be changed shows that you're thinking in the right direction and just have to keep at it and success will come!
