I'm a software developer and currently working as a consultant/freelancer. Last year I sold my first SaaS company, but it wasn't a big success (despite the learning). My company solved a problem (decision making), but we didn't get the market research right in the first place, so we didn't solve a problem that our target customer would search for. Decision making as a topic was too generic to get enough users.

I really like the idea of searching for problems instead of "business ideas", but I'm stuck selecting the correct keywords to start with. I have ten years of experience with embedded software (safety critical stuff like aerospace) and web development (scalable web applications). I want to join these two worlds and the 'internet of things' is something that comes to mind quickly. I'm sure there are enough interesting problems to solve, but I don't get the keywords right.

Has anyone a better approach?
