Believe it or not, Oreo is a knockoff brand and a cookie called Hydrox was the original cookie sandwich.
Jacob and Joseph Loose were brothers that owned the largest bakery in America. After a fight, Jacob (the younger brother) left the company and Joseph (older brother) merged with their biggest competitor which was Nabisco. After this, Jacob decided to start his own bakery to get back after his brother to compete with the largest bakery in USA. He started the company in 1882 and his company took off in 1908 thanks to a cookie he created called Hydrox. Joseph took noticed and decided to create a copycat called Oreo. They saw this as an opportunity to put Hydrox out of bus due to the name sounding like a cleaning product. They spent more money and doubled down on their marketing, changed the packaging, and made their cookies more expensive to kill their competition.
Value skews that Oreo took advantage of:
Pricing - They made their cookies more expensive to appear premium
Packaging - Oreo opted for a more simple designed
Name changing - Oreo came from the Oreodaphne plant name
Marketing - One of their popular campaigns involved how people would eat the cookie. They would twist the cookie, see which side has more cream filling, lick it, and dump it in milk.
I made this post because I see the same principles and strategy that MJ preaches in this three books and found a real life example of one. It also proves that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. I hope this helps and was found useful.
