How Do I Do Market Research....???

Hey Everyone!

I am newer to the forum, but I have an idea for a product.
I don't think it's a new idea, but it hasn't been executed well by others that have done something similar.

My question is....
How do I do market research?

So, I want to put my product together and get it patented.
But, before I do so, I would like to do market research to determine a need.
I have been told by the people I talk to, there is a need.
However, a small handful isn't what I am after. I am after the larger majority.

My product needs to be ordered from over-seas, and pieced together.
However, I can only order in bulk. So, I would have around 500 units.
Which would be fantastic, if there really is a need.

The product would retail for around $20. Probably $19.95 then $9.95 for every additional year.

I understand the need to take action. I really would like to.
But, I don't want to dump the $2,000 into patents and product, if I am just going to sit on it.
Meaning, there isn't a market.
