how can I get more backlinks to my site?

I have a few wordpress site set up and they have good relevant content and relevant domain names. I am not monetizing them yet because I would like to get traffic to them. One of them gets approx. 1 - 2 visitors a month, could be robots...I'm not sure.

I need more backlinks because the keywords I am trying to rank for have little to NO competition. I know people get backlinks like crazy! I work my butt off to get backlinks from article directories after writing tons of different relevant content related to my sites. This is a long tough process. Something that i am willing to pay for but everything I have looked into buying / paying for seems pretty sketchy.

I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions or new of any services I could use also some cool word press tricks maybe I have not learned about that I can do.
