Hi everybody!
I joined this community because I've literally just started reading the Millionaire Fastlane (I'm on chapter 3 now) and I thought that joining this community would be a good thing for me, to surround myself with people I can learn from and people who have similar goals to me. I want to be financially free because I want to be in control of my own time to make more time for pursuing things I love such as: writing, charity work, activism and studying religion, theology, and philosophy. I have found that between university and my part-time job, it's not impossible to dedicate time to these things, but I can't dedicate nearly as much time as I would like to.
From pretty much every adult in my life I was taught the slow lane mentality. Go to school, get good grades, go to university, get a degree, get a good job and right now I'm at the "go to university" part of the equation and I don't see much light at the end of the tunnel. I'm studying to be a teacher and I work part-time as a teaching assistant. There's aspects of teaching I love like helping young people and building a bond with my students, but there's also a part of teaching I don't like and that's just the feeling of hopelessness. Teachers don't earn nearly enough as they should, schools lack basic resources, the curriculum I will be teaching isn't completely useless but it could be much better, and I just think- is this it? I've seen so many teachers overworked and underpaid, young people like me who got into teaching wanting to help children and young people but have been driven out for a multitude of reasons. Staff teams are stressed out for one reason or another and if they get a metaphorical kick up the backside from someone, they'll give you a metaphorical kick up the backside one minute and then try to be friendly with you the next, and it's not their fault I know, they're doing the best they can with the circumstances we're given- but given my experience, and hearing the testimonies of others, I don't want that. I want more than that, I want my life to be more fulfilling than that.
I want to genuinely help people and make a difference and have a liveable income where I am comfortable and my family are comfortable and once I've gained that wealth I want to teach others how to get it. I don't want to lose myself, my morals, my values in being rich. My greatest fear is becoming one of those out of touch rich people who only cares about themselves and their inner circle. I don't want to be someone who has the power to make a difference in their community, across the world, but just sit in silence and shrug and ignore the reality because I'm comfortable. I want to become financially free so I am time free, so I can donate more of my time and money to helping others in several ways whether it be through my writing, my charity work and activism, my studying of religion, theology and philosophy, or raising my future children to do the same.
My goals with financial freedom are selfish to an extent, I'd be lying if I said they weren't- of course I want to be comfortable and not worry about money and I want to be able to spend money on treats for myself and my friends and family without it leaving a huge dent in my savings account. But there's also a huge part of my goal to be financially free that is about giving back to the community, serving others, and as corny as it sounds helping the world become a better place. I just pray that I don't lose myself and these initial goals I've discussed in this post once I get there.
