Hello guys,

Been a while since I posted here.

To the point

Me and my fiancé have come across a great niche in the pet subscription service. We came across this down to our own experience with our 2 dogs.

It is nutrition based but like other subscription boxes, there will be toys, cleaning products etc.

The problem is, we're wasting valuable time overthinking a name when we could be spending our time working on our service.

I appreciate all the help and feedback that is given. Upon launch for all dog owners and lovers a discount code will be posted! :)

Just a couple of quick one's of the top of my head:

The Pampered Pooch

The Hairy Hamper

Hound of the Basket-ville’s Gift Baskets

Thanks @Nicko

We did actually come up with The Pampered Pooch ourselves but domain wasn't available. We've aimed for a word name example (Bark Box, Pawsome Box) but things seem to be taken and not used. Annoying.

I've actually just woke up to get a few hours ahead of the day and begin ordering some samples, which will give me an extra 2 hours to sit and brainstorm a few names.

@CommonCents 2 awesome names we came up with, domain was taken. Emailed the owners about them and they wouldn't sell. Wouldn't mind but they were dead sites.

@KLaw Thanks, but from experience think it would properly cause confusion to what we are offering.

Would you consider using .dog as a domain name? I could see that opening up a lot of options for you.

Never thought of that, but again I still believe a .com domain is essential for any business. Could have the .dog redirecting to the .com

WeArePetty.com

You can say something like.... "Some people think pets are of little importance. We're different. Pets mean a lot to us. We're Petty!"

Or replace pets mean a lot to us with some other words that play off of the use of petty.

Good luck in your search

Are you focusing on just dogs or other pets as well. If just dogs have a look at names with Cannine or even K9 as there are some options available (k9offers.com for example).

@David Young We are indeed focusing on just dogs.

Little update ;- found an amazing name, fell in love with it. Turns out it's trademarked, right into the category that we would be expanding into once things take off.

We've settled on a name which is fit for purpose and we do love. It's similar to an existing box out there, but their name does limit their audience. Also our name will allow us to change course if things do go wrong.

Thanks everyone for suggestions, Will be setting up a progress thread shortly for you to track our progress and a reflection for ourselves. Discount code will no doubt be published in there too.!

Using dog in the name may restrict you if you want to expand to other pets in the future, so here are a few other suggestions:

@CommonCents 2 awesome names we came up with, domain was taken. Emailed the owners about them and they wouldn't sell. Wouldn't mind but they were dead sites.

People always get hung up on a name, but the name really doesn't matter so long as it's easy to remember. I was guilty of this my first few attempts but quickly learned how irrelevant it is. It's all too easy to get caught up in trying to think of a name that's relevant and descriptive about the business. You think it's a disservice to pick anything but 'the perfect name'. Often that kind of thinking about your name can be detrimental because it's not unique enough; not memorable enough.

Have you ever really sat back and thought about how memorable the names of your competitors really are? As competition increases for them, their name will blend in with the others in the market.Think about it! BarkBox, Bowzer Box, Barkery Box, Bugsy's Box, Bully Bundles, Meow Box, Paws and Play, Paw Pak, Pet Box, Poochy Perks, Pup Joy, the list goes on and on. The competition in this space is huge and growing each day thanks to guys like Rohan Gilkes on Reddit. And as the market get's flooded none of these names sound unique anymore. Why? Because they're trying to be descriptive about their product and market...which is common to all of the players!

Want to be unique? Try sites like soybomb.com that generate non-sense words. Find one to use as a name that has a unique ring to it and use that instead. Play with words in your head and come up with ways to spin that in incorporate it into part of your company's story. For instance, soybomb just spit out 'rallar'. Kind of cool since it's a palindrome so you could play with that in the font (forwards R and backwards R on either end). I googled it just to see if anyone is using it for porn or other purposes that I should stay away from. Turns out rallar is actually a Spanish word that means:

Crumble with grater rubbing something , especially food :
bread crumbs to make breaded fillets.

So think of a story about how that can play into your business. Maybe the dog used to tear apart your house (eating trim, furniture, shoes, drywall, etc...think crumble) and so now with these toys you found he stopped so you're making them available to others and along with that other healthy treats your pets will love...

This approach also makes it easier to find domain names. Rallar.com isn't available but is for sale. Really that doesn't matter though. Instead you could take it in a different way. Instead of rallar.com maybe do rallar.club and spin the membership angle. As a redirect also buy rallarclub.com which is available. If you can't get the .com domain don't let that be a deterrent. It's easier to incorporate the domain into the company name than it is the other way around. New domains are released (or pending release) all the time, so don't let that be a hang-up to your progress. Think about how to market whatever name and domain you choose and rather than getting too caught up in the name itself. So long as the name is unique and you can write good copy around it, it really doesn't matter so long as you make it memorable.
