My name is Joseph and I am 50 yo in the slow lane, with two new kids to boot. I wish I was aware of this 30 years ago, but alas, I was sold on the promise of high paying jobs, compounding interest, et all.
Rather than worry about could have beens, I'm all about what's coming. And that is a complete life rewiring to join the fast lane.
Cheers!

Welcome. Thanks for your intro Joseph.

You’ve at least two powerful reasons to get unscripted, and congrats on them both.

What sort of work do you currently do? What sort of business are you hoping to grow?

Howdy Andy :)...

Currently - I work in IT as a software developer. I have been preparing to switch careers into affiliate marketing for a while now. I am at a point where all the research is complete, the basics are covered so it's time to execute on the plan.

What about you?

Maybe don’t “switch”, but start gradually and build up revenue till you can give up the day job?

I’m about the same age as you, with three boys and a grown up stepson. I was in IT for about 15 years (mostly as a Production Oracle DBA on Unix systems). I got into Google Ads back in 2009 and have been doing that ever since. I tell the story of how I fell into Google Ads in the first radio interview in my signature. There’s a lot of stuff in my signature too.

Welcome to the forum. We hope you stick around, and reach your goals.

Welcome!

Is there any pressing reason to make a full switch to a completely new industry (IT->Marketing)? Why not slowly build up the affiliate marketing business and once it is fully successful (i.e. making more than your regular job) make the switch?

Welcome and congratulations. This place is great. If you cross paths with a member saying that over 35 is not a good age, just ignore him he is full of BS.
I´m glad you are here and you will make it for sure. Anything you need just reach out.

Welcome to the forum Joseph!
I think that in order to get the best experience from the forum you should start to read some gold threads, which contains some of the best advices that you could get from people that have attained a certain level of business success!

You said that you wanted to start an affiliate marketing business, but maybe it would be better if you do something related to your skillset? You already have experience in the software industry, why not start something with that? Maybe with just freelancing at first and then once you find a problem that you could solve and have a great business potential you could develop a software solution to address it?
Just my 2¢

Thanks for reading this, have a good day Joseph!

Wow! I am truly humbled by your responses - certainly not what I expected from joining the forum.

I am already half way through Unscripted - I can certainly see why I feel like I lived in the Matrix for all my life - but alas - that's not really important.

I truly appreciate the feedback, the questions, the pointers. It did take me by surprise - so I spent a good hour reflecting on those same questions. Again :)

I would like to take this opportunity to explain myself - not so much to indicate that I know what I'm doing, more so for an opportunity for getting feedback f I may. It helps me focus and center myself.

Immediately after the birth of my first boy 15 months ago - the reality of this little new life form in my arms hit me like a ton of bricks. I realized that the 6 figure salary, the little nest-egg I built based on conventional methods will just not cut it. I am not overindulging in any sense, I was always "responsible", but I realized - it is just not enough.

My industry - software development - as you may know - is unforgiving. Undoubtedly most are. I realized that my teenage boy (now boys) at the time of his dad's retirement in 10-15 years time (I I even make it that long) will certainly encounter financial difficulties if things continue as they are. (Thank God I am healthy (again), fit(ish), and have a somewhat educated 'noggin'. My life expectancy I certainly hope is at least another few decades. However long it is - I need to take control of it.)

We digress... I was and still am a respected member of the organization - but the gentle push already started 5 years ago. The much sought after software architect was promoted to team lead, then demoted to three consecutive consulting gigs way below my capacity - just to fill some immediate corporate need and to satisfy some client relationships... Five years later, with eroded skills that are behind the times - I realized I was at a crossroad. Just like in the Matrix - I had this sense that the system is NOT working for me but I am a valuable contributor to the system.

Both the Millionaire Fastlane and Unscripted hit home. Thank you @MJ DeMarco ... :)

A year and a half ago - I decided that something needed to be done. I dabbled in this and that - which did include starting a software company on the side resulting in a published app. That was not the problem. I was. I had no idea what I was doing and why - beyond just 'wanting' to be an entrepreneur and make money. So - 6 or so months ago - I hit a hard stop. I realized I needed to change first. Enter the Mindset re-wiring phase, followed by extensive research into online opportunities that align with my skills (development / tech skills, producing high quality visual presentations, being sociable, problem solver - both technical, business and yes - even marketing, etc).

Since I was already a consumer of the 'make money online' niche - one thing was and still is apparent. There is a LOT of need and room in this space for helping people with introductions, setup, automation, product selection / vetting, blog configuration, etc. Not to mention the FB/G advertising & SEO skills as well.

My experience and the observations made over the last year or so led me to this point. So - I have a plan. It's been brewing in my head and on the countless pages of my notebook, my word docs, spreadsheets and Visio diagrams). It just so happens that I have a 4-5 month hiatus from my job starting in January - the perfect time and timing to put the plan into full time action. This is it. The seeds are already sown in any case, now it's time to water, tend, de-weed (is that even a word - lol?) and nurture.

As far as the money goes - even if I come just close enough to replace my income, given my starting point - my family and I already won. If nothing else - they will get more time with daddy. So - I have to do this. I have to succeed. And I will.

Joseph.
PS: Thanks for the tips. I guess I will have to poke around the forums a bit more :) First though - to the little matter of finishing 'Unscripted'. Cheers all!

PPS: It feels kinda strange to open up, justify, illustrate, describe anything on a public forum, given how ugly public forums can be - and I usually do not go there. Having said that - this feels different. The presence and response from Mr De Marco himself makes it so...

Cheers all. May you have all the success you deserve ;)

You don’t need to match your current income. You “just” need to cover your monthly outgoings. When you’re there you can decide whether to go all-in on your business, in which case you get an extra 40+ hours a week to work on it.

You’re an engineer by trade. Your analytical, planning, and organisational strengths can be your weakness too. Beware consuming too much and spending too long planning.

“The market doesn’t pay for input.” (Blaise Brosnan)

Maybe these threads might help (he says, encouraging you to consume some more):

Hey Joseph, welcome to the fastlane forum!

As Andy says in his post, I think its important to not get ahead of yourself and actually be smooth about the transition. Whats most important in my opinion, is that you have a monthly cashflow, no matter from where.

If you currently have no side business / assets that bring you any monthly cashflow, its important to keep your job until you do.
