Greetings,
I just want to introduce myself. I’m form East Germany, in my early thirties and my background is industrial engineering. As slowlane employee (working in the energy sector) I’m living a cushy and stable life. So why join this forum?
After I started working and got used to the industry in terms of custom and lingo I developed an unsettling feeling how a job is the “end” and asked myself: Is this it? Occasionally doing some interesting stuff, but mostly dealing with lot of internal and external bureaucracy and regulation. Maybe climb the corporate ladder and then retire. Could be just a symptom of the professional field I wondered. So I took a look at friends, family and people I know to see if their outlook on life was different. And generally, what I saw did not deviate much from what I already experienced. Addressing this, all I heard (I’m paraphrasing): that’s how things are supposed to be. This made me feel empty to say the least, for I thought I knew how life will unfold. I stay in servitude during my “good years” for a paycheck and a couple days of vacation until I retire. After that old age and sickness will occupy the time I’m supposed to be free. Not a healthy mindset, but that’s how things are supposed to be, right?
I thought so until I read TMF and UNSCRIPTED . Both books capture exactly what is bothering me and describe ways out of this “existence on tranquilizers”. For the first time in a while I saw a glimmer of hope to escape what is known as slowlane. To create value, to communicate and to deliver it are the tasks ahead. This may sound simple I guess but is very hard to navigate if one is without experience. Theoretically I know what to do but practically can’t get a hold of it. The mental image I have is standing in front of a canyon and at the other side you see a stairway which leads to your goal but somehow it’s impossible to cross the canyon because you don’t know where a bridge is.
After lurking and reading some very inspiring threads I figured some involvement is vital to cross the canyon. Perhaps by getting being active I’ll figure out where the metaphorical bridge is and finally get to the stairway. While I’m at it I hope to meet some interesting people and maybe help others. So that’s why I’m here.
In terms of creating value and communicate it: I have a small project in mind. The idea is to reach out to multiple institutions at once via a website. For example a regular person would select different bakeries and e-mail them about a wedding cake. I’m wondering if WordPress could be a possible way to do it or if a holistic webdesign approach is better. I know this is quite vague and I’m not sure if this belongs in an introduction thread. If someone can point me to a thread about web mailing functions I would be very grateful.
Thank you for your time reading this introduction.
