A lot of people like to suggest reward based incentives to help combat procrastination. For example: 'When I finish writing my business plan, I'll buy myself a new suit'... or something like that.
I find that doesn't work for me, and I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way.
I offer a simple alternative for those who suffer from being lazy/procrastination. Make it hurt.
What do I mean by this? Make the consequences so bad, that you give yourself no other option but to complete whatever it is you have to complete.
For example, for the last six months I've put off writing my next speech within the Toastmasters organization. My last speech was in July!! Next week, I'm giving two speeches at two different clubs. I made this decision last Wednesday!! So I couldn't motivate myself to write a speech in over six months, but now I've written two in one day? How so? Well, I gave a friend $250 in cash and said that if I don't finish my speeches by 'x' day she gets to keep the money. Now, I like my friends and all, but no way in hell I want to give her $250 of my own money. So the speeches were both completed within 3 hours... when for the previous six months I'd written nothing.
I've done this for different things (taking inventory, etc) a few times and now I'm at the point where I just get it done, because I want it bad (success, world domination, etc). But when I finally decided to beat procrastination this little trick helped me a lot.
It's basically accountability on steroids. Telling someone your goals is not enough if you still find yourself procrastinating. Seeing that money change hands and knowing you ain't getting it back unless you get to work and quit playing around... you better believe that's motivating.
It has to be enough money that you'd feel it if it was gone. $10 won't do it for example (unless you're extremely cheap haha).
That's all. Now that I've officially beaten procrastination, I have more work to do. :urock2:
