Going straight to the manufacturer for the cheapest price

I know someone at my school who started an e-commerce business from scratch. His story was remarkably simple: After selling his niche products on ebay and amazon for a while, he tried contacting the manufacturers directly and buying directly. He started a website, which looks like a generic e-commerce store, rented out some warehouse space, and started bringing in good money. If I didn't know how successful this guy was I would not not have thought his website was so profitable (both the website and the niche are good but not ingenius)

I am thinking that this is the key to starting a successful ecommerce business - getting products straight from the manufacturer. Has anyone dealt with manufacturuers directly? Is it harder to buy directly than I'm assuming it is from what I've heard?
