Hello everybody,
I read TMF a few years ago and with that book, MJ woke me up. Naturally, I did not take action at the time. I was cruising in a (what I thought was) a great job, and just waking up to the idea that being an employee was not the way to provide my family with opportunities and myself with freedom.
When MJ released unscripted I read it, and although it was not as shocking for me as TMF, it re-ignited the fire feeling that I was working towards someone else's goals.
My employer put me in his inner circle and shared important information with me, such as his expectations on revenue per employee, his profit margins, and overall costs to operate. Also, I could see he was doing very well. I learned other important things by "contrarius sensu", and what not to do if I wanted to keep employees happy. I noted an American old-school trend of ruling by fear, via randomly making employees feel that they could be terminated at any time. I learned all that and put it on the "not to do" column.
Last year I took the leap. While I continued to do some work for others so I could build while keeping my war chest, I resigned to my cherished (and desired by many) position and went on my own. That was a real leap of faith and required a lot of courage. There were times when I thought I regretted it, but now I know it was the right choice to make.
My wife supporting me while freaking out and encouraging me forward was (and is) a fundamental asset that relieves all the pressure in the world. I can say that thanks to that support and loving encouragement, I am enjoying the ride.
I started last year, trying to build on solid ground, at a steady pace. All indicates that in 2024 we will be profitable even after paying employees and myself a reasonable salary (S-Corp rules, baby).
I can't express how much I appreciate MJ's teachings and encouragement, even without knowing him personally. Amazing how someone could be personally invaluable just from his work. I believe he was (and is) more generous than most and I value that immensely.
I am working towards my goals, my freedom, and my family now, and it feels good, even considering I am learning every day and every hour.
I will make a new post with a progress report if anyone is interested. I guess one tends to think his stuff is more interesting than what it really is.
