So I was fishing in Mississippi, for the first time, a few weeks back on a really hot day (was 95~ F but felt like 120 F) when something occurred to me.
If you want to see how entrepreneurship work after reading one of MJ's book, go fishing.
That day I threw lines after lines only to not catch a single fish. Not only that, most of the lines I threw came back to me with no hook (due to the fishing weights fitting PERFECTLY between rocks) or have baits SURGICALLY removed by fish. For those who don't fish, a line usually has a fishing weight(to have the line sink) and a hook(sometime many). My uncle on the other hand, who sat next to me would reel in catfish after catfish with every single throw(like what the hell? you would think he had the whole river marked up or raised the fish there himself). I remember laughing in self-deprecation when he said that I sucked at fishing. I really did and still am, but I'm learning. Maybe 2 hours in, it occurred to me after a while that I was doing something wrong when compared to my uncle. Out of every 10 of his throws, at least 1 yield a fish if not even 2 or 3. Talking to him, I realized he's been fishing at the same spot for about 4 years now. He knows how far the line should be thrown for fish to bite. He also know where to throw to decrease the chance of the line being snapped off by rocks. Oh yeah, not to mention, he knows how to reel a big fish in so that you don't sprain your wrist. Imagine landing a big fish only to let it escape because of how you reel and hold the rod. That being said he still has his days when he come home with nothing. Or days when big fish snaps the line after implementing perfect techniques.
He knows the market(the pond)-he had plenty of time to research in the past 4 years-, he knows the values that need skewing and obstacles to avoid(the line distance, the location of rocks), and he knows how to let success land(with his reels). Despite knowing the market, the values to skew, and knowing how to get leads and sales... he sometimes fail. If that's not playing baseball with businesses, then I don't know what is.
After fishing with him a few times, I can land some fish myself though not many on a good day LOL. I'd sweat for hours on somedays, and throw line for naught. I'd sweat for hours on others days, and blessed by a 10 pounder.
Patience, Persistence, and Continual Improvement with every throw is what I learned this summer.
I haven't been on the entrepreneurship journey for long. I just finished reading MJ's books actually. I just turned 20. I just earned a check from selling a service for the first time ever two weeks back.
I just learned how to create value in someone's life and was rewarded for it.
I'm a 20 year old newborn and that check marks the metaphorical fishing trip I'm about to embark on!
My lines will be broken and I will catch some stone, but the fish will come.
