I’ve been thinking about a simple approach to finding product ideas from customer pain points, and I’d love to get some feedback.

The basic idea is to look for recurring problems in existing products rather than trying to come up with an idea from scratch.

Here’s the process I’m thinking about:

1. Pick a niche/product category

For example, choose a product on Amazon that has multiple competing brands and a large number of reviews.

2. Look specifically at 3-star reviews

Use a script/tool to collect a sample of 3-star reviews and export them into CSV/Excel.

3. Collect reviews across multiple brands

Rather than looking at one product, I’d collect 20–50 reviews from at least 5 different brands selling essentially the same type of product.

The reasoning is that if the same complaint keeps appearing across different brands, it may indicate a broader market pain point rather than a problem with just one company.

4. Analyze the combined reviews

Put the reviews into an AI tool and ask it to identify:

  • recurring complaints
  • unmet needs
  • common frustrations
  • features customers wish were different
  • problems that existing products aren’t solving well
5. Investigate the strongest recurring pain points

Instead of immediately building whatever the AI suggests, I’d then research whether the problem is actually significant enough that people would pay for a better solution.

The hypothesis is:

Existing products → customer complaints → recurring pain points → potential opportunities → validation → product

I’ve come up with a product idea using this approach and created a landing page. Now I am learning Google Ads to validate it.

What do you think about this approach?
