Just turned 19 today and I don't feel any different. Why? Because that biological birthday means nothing.

My true birthday will be the day I don't need to rely on handouts from my parents anymore. Just like John D Rockefeller forever celebrated the day he got his first job and thus his financial independence with even more enthusiasm than his birthday, I too will forever celebrate my own day of financial independence with even more zeal than my biological birthday. That day I finally achieve financial sanity.

I will post daily in this thread as long as I'm financially insane, as long as I keep relying off my parents and not myself for the bulk of my basic income. My current goal is $100/day by the end of this month via ecommerce. I've steered away from making a journey thread with a title like "Journey to $X per day/month" because I've found that those mid-level types of goals and situations change for various reasons and when they do the irrelevant title just ruins the whole thread. My goal of $100/day by this end of this month may morph and change but the goal of financial independence and sanity will not change, it's not going away until achieved and is a fact of life. Thus this thread will continue to be posted in until the day I achieve financial independence, my second birthday.

Feel free to hit me up if you'd like to network, mastermind, or chat. Otherwise, let's do this.
-------
Day 1- 5/2/17
Current Goal:

$100+/day profits for a week straight by June 1st

Current Ventures:

-a social media marketing company
-shopify dropshipping store

Earnings: $8

$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company

Summary of Today
Worked on moving forward the sale of my hat company to a friend who will do well with it. Built a hat company for 2 years, got into 3 stores, and then lost passion/vision for it. Sold it to my friend for $1000 and he will cover the shipping costs of the inventory being shipped to him. Did a workout. Decided that I wanted to move to Austin Texas after my lease ends at the end of July. Going to bed very late (1:10PM), whatever, it was a good day.

Big Items for Tomorrow:
-catch up on 4 months of accounting
-optimize dropshipping site and learn more about ecommerce dropshipping

Woke up a bit late so it was a short day. Did all the accounting for the past 4 months on my business account and 9 months on my personal bank account, reconciling hundreds of transactions. Veered a bit off track by the end with watching an hour of TV.

Day 3 5/4/17
Current Goal:

$100+/day profits for a week straight by June 1st

Current Ventures:

-a social media marketing company
-shopify dropshipping store

Earnings: $8

$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company

Summary of Today
Woke up at 3:30PM. Did the rest of the week's posts for a client. Cleaned my desktop out. Switched out the domain of one of my websites to a different registrar and hosting before both those things expired (long and tedious process). Worked on solving my squatting problem in my leg where I'm feeling pain. Seems to be a psoas problem. Decent day, could've been better in that I'd worked faster and done something more pertinent towards making my $100/day. Nonetheless, I'm still grateful for any progress over no progress however.

Summary of Today
Woke up at 4:30PM after setting my alarm for 1:40PM. Not happy with that. Did a few maintance tasks and added items to my shopify dropshipping site. I feel like I'm going insane from not getting a workout in because I'm F*cking injured. Gotta cut my losses, wake up early tomorrow, see the sun and the beach, and win.

No offense, but your goal even now seems semi unrealistic. I'd give yourself a year to learn and profit off e-commerce. And I'd get a job so you can stop living off your parents. And I dont know what time zone you're working in but you should be waking up at 6am everyday and working if thats something you want.

Good luck

So far this thread is filled with action fake. There's little to nothing that you're doing which will get you closer to $100/day.

You have a lot of posts along the lines of "Cleaned my desktop out", or "Did all the accounting for the past 4 months on my business account".

You need to take a step back and create an actual plan. It seems like you're just waking up everyday at 3pm and coming up with some bullshit tasks to convince yourself that you're running a business, though really there's next to no purpose or direction.

Yeah I know, I'm not really working nearly as much as I need to. 0-2 hours a day whereas I probably need like 8-10 hours a day to get anywhere. A lot of my addictions to watching politics are getting the better of me. I'm working to destroy this tendency towards addiction by socializing more, going to meetups, and possibly building a mastermind group. Willpower alone is shot.

Your primary problem is not that you're not working as much as needed to. Your primary problem is that you have no defined plan for achieving your goal.

You need a plan.

Without a plan, you're going to run around for a couple years accomplishing nothing before giving up.

Take a step back. Maybe go through some online courses on how to launch a product/service. Or read some progress threads. Or just create a plan, ask for feedback, and refine your plan.

If you had a plan, then you wouldn't be doing the tasks that you're doing. You'd be writing about other things. Stop misdirecting yourself, make a plan, and start getting rich.

I don't understand the point of this thread. The first post looked promising, but your diary since reads like a comedy sketch.

What the hell are you doing with your life, @LordPhenny? Waking up at 4PM, dabbling with some crap for an hour or two and then watching TV into the early hours? Sounds like what I used to do when I was 15. Only I wasn't trying to convince myself I was building a business.

Seems to me you should (shock, horror) go get a job. Preferably in sales, or something similar that's going to condition you with tough daily discipline. When you have the basic habits of succeeding at life down, maybe you can come back in a year or two and write another progress thread that isn't driven by instant gratification-seeking nonsense.

You need a plan.
I personally think I literally just need to spend more hours working (I'm going to be changing my goal in the daily post below). I always have a general plan in mind for what I should be getting done within the next few days. Watching an ecommerce course is one of the things I have to do, along with setting Facebook ads back up +optimizing them, adding more products to my store, etc. The big picture is all in my head and I personally don't really see value in making crazy precise plans that become obsolete the moment some minor logistics change.

But perhaps there is some advice on planning you have that may be beneficial.

I'm a fan of focus.

Seems to me you should (shock, horror) go get a job.
I have quite a bit of time and money saved up that this isn't necessary, I'd rather atleast try to develop my long term projects while I have the safety net of savings than jump into a short term panic artificially (AKA a job). My parents are going to completely cut my rent off in a few months when I let them know I'm not going to college so worse comes to worse, yes a job will be gotten but I have quite a few contingency plans even before than happening.

Day 9 5/10/17
Current Goal:

PRIMARY: 4+ hours a day of business work for 4 days straight (5/11-5/14)

Current Ventures:

Hours Worked Today:
1.5 hours

Earnings: $8
$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company

Summary of Today
Woke up at 5PM and watched 4.5 hours of TV. Not sure what happened exactly but I got ready for the day over a few hours. Noticed that people started commenting on my Fastlane forum thread after only a few days prior I had falsely assumed Fastlane just had terrible engagement. Analyzed why the F*ck I just wasted the past few days. Made an interesting model of factors that lead to completing goals. Determined that my addiction is raping my life and I need to just add more self-discipline. Prepared to ship a 50lbs box of merchandise from my company I'm selling to my friend in Poland. Found some potential shippers.

I'm going to continue being completely honest with you guys (and ultimately myself as well) about what I'm literally doing each day. The tough love and "What the F*ck are you doing, I pulled these shenanigans when I was 15" is great and motivating. So keep being a dick to me and calling out my bullshit and I'll try my best to have less of it.

I'm making my primary goal just to work more hours on business in a day. I've averaged 1.6 hours of business work per day since I started recording a few days ago. This is absolutely inexcusable and pathetic and no wonder I'm getting nowhere. I want to start off with a daily hour count that I know 100% I should be able to achieve (4+ hours for 4 days) and then I'll eventually make more goals to gradually get my hour count higher and higher until I'm working 8+ hours a day on business on all my work days consistently.

Big Items for Tomorrow:
-optimize dropshipping site and learn more about ecommerce dropshipping
-social media Sunday (make all posts for this week, not on a Sunday though because I missed it and am doing it now)

My only advice. Stop waking up so late. Also, stop watching TV so mindlessly. It has no benifits for you. Your main objective should be execution. If you keep waking up late, and watching tv for many hours, that will be a difficult habit to break. I'm rooting for you tho!

I guess one benefit to being up all night is you can watch hours and hours of infomercials. In TMF, even MJ said he watches infomercials occasionally. Just don't buy anything--remember, you're a producer now, not a consumer. You can learn how to sell stuff by watching people sell stuff. Maybe have them going in the background as you work on building your business?

Indeed but OP watches politics I believe. All those hours spent on TV could've been spent on executing.

It's about working hard, sweat, and tears.. and persevering. To put it into perspective, Lebron James wakes up at 4 AM everyday to train. Bill gates put in so many hours to build software and stuff. Michael phelps puts in many hours to be the best. Simply, the key is hard work. It's about how you spend your time. This is my opinion, take with a grain of salt

OK. I gathered you don't need the money right now, else you wouldn't be making the choices you're making.

What you do need is discipline. When you're forced to become disciplined, that's exactly what you'll do. When it's ingrained in you, it'll be easier to keep the habit. There's nothing forcing you to be disciplined right now.

When you have to pay the bills and you have to make your sales figures to make the rent? You'll find a way.

This is one of the most absurd things I've read here in a while.

It's as simple as making a decision.

Do you want to work - or don't you?

Do you want to spend your time productively - or not?

So work. Be productive.

Or don't. Get up in the evening and watch TV all night until circumstances force you to change your ways.

Either one of those choices is going to make you happier and cause you less mental anguish than this half-in, half-out bullshit.

Who will you choose to BE, from this day forward?

As an insomniac, I read the book "Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Stragegies to Sleep Your Way to A Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success" by Shawn Stevenson and it's been changing my life. I'm still only halfway done, but that half has already helped me get my head together much better than watching TV. Reading gold threads helps, too.

Another book that's been helping me focus in the mornings is "The Miracle Morning" by Hal Elrod. Set a timer between activities so you don't overdo any one thing.

If these books can change my life, they have the power to effect you as well. Best Regards

Edit: These books don't work without active commitment. If you can commit to a workout, you can commit to changing your life, as you've already taken a big first step.

110% agree. I'm making it a priority.

I think your contention is that my goal is only 4+ hours a day for the next 4 days. While 4+ hours of work per day is honestly nothing and might sound ridiculous to you, it's a huge step over 1.6 hours a day. Also, I'm not aiming for just 4 hours a day, that's why I have a 4+ (and you will see below that I managed to exceed 4 hours of work today.) All or nothing would be ideal but I personally think baby steps and building up a track record of "if I did 4 hours for the past 4 days, why not 6+ hours, etc" is the practical way to go here. But you may disagree, which I understand.

As an insomniac
I'm personally not an insomniac, I fall and stay asleep within 10 minutes. Due solely to my lack of discipline (which I'm really focused in on developing) I have often indulged a bad cycle as follows.
Work a few days decently--> get cocky-->fall off the wagon and binge watch Netflix, political commentary, societal analysis bullshit like I'm some political scientist or sociologist. In doing so, I stay up until the wee hours of the night and my sleep schedule becomes F*cked.-->Eventually panic because I just wasted a couple days doing complete bullshit--> get back on the wagon

The way to break this cycle is twofold:
1. Become a discipline freak
2. Have other fun things outside of being a TV watching sociologist for a few days that consume less time and are more productive.

Day 10 5/11/17
Current Goal:

PRIMARY: 4+ hours a day of business work for 4 days straight (5/11-5/14)
AUXILIARY: $100+/day profits for a week straight by June 1st

Current Ventures:

-a social media marketing company
-shopify dropshipping store

Hours Worked Today:
6.25 hours

Earnings: $8
$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company

Summary of Today
Woke up at 5PM. Smooth preparation for the day. Overall, just spent the day putting out a ton of fires that were a result of taking the previous days off to be a TV binging sociologist. Exerted a significant amount of willpower to stay on task. Also used the app Clockwork Tomato to track my time spent working and do the Pomodoro technique of maximum focus. Yeah it was fun and interesting, now I need the discipline to continue doing it as it has proven to work so well.

Planned out my client's social media posts until Monday. Set up a Snapchat geofilter for just 7 hours tomorrow. Spent time trying to figure out why my Gsuite business gmail still wasn't receiving mail. Eventually called Google up and they moved me along in the process. My computer has been crashing randomly since the recent windows 10 update, did a lot of steps to scan and fix my system while setting up a standing desk I'd got as a gift for my birthday. Got now 3 different shipping possibilities for shipping my past company equity to the friend I sold it to in Poland.

Today was a fire putting out day, enough of that. Now's time to get to the substance and focus on the growth of my ventures with the same laser focus and quantity of hours I worked today.

Hours Worked Today:
6.6 hours

Earnings: $8
$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company

Summary of Today
Woke up at 1:30PM. Started the day with the bombshell that Massplanner had been shutdown. I couldn't believe it. I wasn't too heavily invested but nonetheless I still was in running a few niche accounts along with my clients' accounts. Will have to find a new service for social media botting. Continued working on the problem with my business GSuite email not receiving emails after moving hosts, I think I solved it but DNS servers take 48 hours to update so I will only know then. Continued in my dropshipping course, picking up on some good ad strategies and product picking strategies. Did some maintanance with chrome and making an account with all the proper bookmarks and extensions on my special dropshipping windows user and gmail.

I spent a bit of time researching this idea I had for a subscription box service (along the lines of lootcrate, birchbox, Blue Apron, etc) for a certain product I'm dropshipping. Subscription services is an interesting business model that I may do in the future when I have more cash and opportunity to take bold risks. My last project was a bold risk but that was 2 years of failure that ended with me selling it to my friend a just a week or so ago. For now, I'll just have to stick with guaranteed and lower risk money making opportunities that I'm certain are out there. Plus my product probably wouldn't work with a subscription service. I went to the gym and then came home to remove a geofilter I set temporarily for my client. Overall, a solid day with measurable actions taken towards making money with dropshipping. Heading to bed now at 3:15AM.

Big Items for Tomorrow:
-finish first dropshipping course
-optimize dropshipping site and learn more about ecommerce dropshipping

Stop thinking about working on your "business" in X many hours per day.

Start think about working on your business on what *single* IMPORTANT task can I do today that will move it FORWARD. Maybe that's testing a new product. Maybe that's creating your store page, so you can test the product tomorrow.

The time you worked on your business doesn't matter. What takes you 24 hours could take someone else 20 minutes. The completion of the task is what matters, and you improve efficiency as you learn and progress. Again, the time it takes to do the task does not matter if the task is done to the best of your ability and it moves you forward towards where you want to go

At the end of every working day, you should have a single task that you will complete the next day. These tasks will snowball into something. You may hit a "failure" at some point - a product doesn't work, or you get a refund, that's okay - work that into the task for the next day and keep moving.

Once your single important task is done everyday, you can do things like your accounting for your business, or other administrative tasks.

If you don't know what your task should be, find one of the many free Ecommerce groups on Facebook - there are a handful of decent ones, and take their course. Go from there.

I'm only a couple years older than you - and fell into the exact same digital generation pitfalls you did. Let me save you a couple years of wasted time .

i would tell you to cut out social media entirely - but it's literally part of your business. Do your best to keep it that way .

I too used to be addicted to the news: you need to kill the triggers. How do you consume it? If it's on TV, never turn on the TV. If it's on your phone , delete the news app. If you have an iPhone , delete the Automatic news side bar that exists when you swipe right/ that shit exists to suck you in.

Netflix. Save yourself the money, and more importantly the time . Delete your subscription today and cut that shit off.

As @Contrarian mentioned, the reason you're not disciplined is because you're not in a situation that forces you to be. In your head- you know that even if your business fails you have a roof over your head and food in your stomach. That's a terrible incentive

Although it sounds counter intuitive because it sucks time - I agree with the advice of getting a job. Doesn't have to be a conventional one - can be free lance work . I'm a writer.

This will do 2 things

1) when you work a job, the idea of working on a freedom creating business will become the most interesting thing in your life . When you don't work a job, mindlessly binging Netflix will become the escape you take from working on your "business". It's all relative.

2) outside perspective from other people . It's not good to be alone , and it's not good to work alone. It sounds like you need some human interaction in your life .

You got this dude.

I totally understand what you're saying regarding not counting the hours, count the quality. I can see if you're someone who has had years of grinding at business under your belt that it's a given you're going to work hard on business each day. The mindset I'm taking with "need to work X number of hours per day" is essentially a beginners mindset/paradigm because my hustle is at that level. There have been stretches of days where I work very little at all and if I could just put in a solid number of hours of work each day consistently for weeks on end, that'll be a huge win for me.

Also, in general, I believe I already have a good intuitive understanding of the important tasks of the day, that's hasn't been the limiting factor to achieving my goals. The limiting factor has been discipline and courage to do the things I know I should do and act on that understanding. When I install a bit of it into my ethos, I have days like the past 3 days of solid work ethic and very little vice.

I use already use wide array of tools to cut down on social media and news watching. Probably 5 different blockers and eradicators. I'm on my family netflix so perhaps its a good idea to "lose" the password right now.

Although it sounds counter intuitive because it sucks time - I agree with the advice of getting a job. Doesn't have to be a conventional one - can be free lance work . I'm a writer.
I would actually be very interested in doing freelance writing as a job. People have always complimented my writing throughout my school years. Perhaps you could point me in the right direction of where to start?

Day 12 5/13/17
Current Goal:

PRIMARY: 4+ hours a day of business work for 4 days straight (5/11-5/14)
AUXILIARY: $100+/day profits for a week straight by June 1st

Current Ventures:

-shopify dropshipping store
-a social media marketing company

Hours Worked on Business Today:
5 hours

Earnings: $8
$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company

Summary of Today
Woke up at 1PM. Started the day shopping for stuff to make chili with and then making the actual chili. Chili feeds me for like 10 days so it actually saves a ton of time on cooking shit over and over when you can just reheat it in the microwave. Did pretty damn well on the chili too this time. Took me a bit longer than I had hoped but whatever. I finished my dropshipping course which was huge. I learned a ton of really good facebook ad techniques that I was completely unaware of before despite fooling around with the FB ads with my past business. Started a split test of two ads and will check on those tomorrow. Overall, another great day, going to bed at 1:36AM right now and expect to wake up in the AM tomorrow (hooray).

Big Items for Tomorrow:
-add more products to the dropshipping site
-learn more about Facebook ads and optimize my current ones
-start back up my Google Adwords

What steps did you take to earn that $8/day? Write out everything you did that lead up to the $8/day, refine that for 45-60 minutes max, turn it into a process (step 1, step 2, etc), repeat/tweak process and keep growing.

You're also spread to thin with all your different ventures, you're already making money with social media management (your parents?) and you're not making any with dropshipping or whatever the hell else you got going on. So just stick with social media management until you're literally an expert and then pivot and grow.

I know you are trying to build discipline and improve yourself to work more effectively, this is why I mention the book.

I'm personally not an insomniac, I fall and stay asleep within 10 minutes.
I'm glad you don't have as much trouble with sleep as I do, the reason I mentioned my insomnia was to make a point in regards to how much the book has helped me. The book is not geared towards insomniacs, but to the general populace. It aims to educate people about the misconceptions of sleep and provide data & information everyone can use to recuperate more effectively. If it can help me with a sleeping disorder, it certainly can help you.

For example: TV emits blue light which has been clinically proven to disrupt the quality of sleep at night. Sleep is the only time in which the body builds and regenerates itself. Sleep is vitally important to maintain hormone balance & re-energize our mind & bodies, so disrupting that period has significant impact on the rest of our waking lives. The book suggests that people refrain from watching TV for 1 & 1/2 hours prior to bedtime. Additionally, falling asleep at 3AM, for example, disrupts our circadian rhythm, our internal clocks "programmed" into our brains. It's been demonstrated that schedules like this will prematurely age us, as well as reducing work efficiency and increases the mistakes we make. Not only will it take you longer to work, you will have to spend more time correcting your mistakes. Humans for generations have fallen asleep shortly after sunset, yet with the invention of the light bulb & subsequent technology, this pattern has been majorly disrupted recently and we are now living in an era in which we are actively working against our own genetic code. Our circadian rhythm has a built in "second wind," an energizing period around the time of 10PM (this time varies seasonally), and this second wind is designed to stimulate our bodies shortly after we fall asleep. This stimulation is designed to enhance our recovery during sleep. By staying awake past this second wind, although we feel more energized, we miss out on the best recovery time our bodies can get, so we would need more sleep to recover & re energize ourselves than if we were to fall asleep prior to that second wind. I hope this information helps you as much or more than it has helped myself.

Best Regards,
Justin

P.S. I am not affiliated with the author or publisher in any way, I make the book recommendation based on what I have read in your post and I sincerely think it can help you as much as it has helped myself.

You're also spread to thin with all your different ventures, you're already making money with social media management (your parents?)
I've been managing the social media of a restaurant (not my parents') for about a year, lost a client in March because I've taken my business model as far as I want it to go and have it running basically on autopilot. It's too much damn work (12 hours a month, $20/hr) and will get really hard to scale if I get like 10 or so clients. But if I was really really going-homeless level strapped for cash, I'd go back to my building my marketing company and building websites for people. It's just that I'm in long term investment mode trying to build a dropshipping site or sites. I was just about breaking even in April on my dropshipping site actually (stopped running the ads 2/3rds through April because I started losing money and discipline to work on refining them). I think I could be realistically be making a decent profit within the next 30 days.

I'm actually very cautious (almost too cautious) about not having my attention spread too thin. I went through highschool as an honors/AP student where it was a F*cking nightmare of thinly spread attention between clubs, businesses I'm trying to start, 5 difficult classes that F*ck you up the a$$. The last thing I want is more split attention. My social media marketing company for my one client is basically on autopilot which means basically 0% of my attention goes into worrying about it. I just follow a process for 12 hours a month and stuff gets accomplished with it. My dropshipping site is where all my energy and focus is.

Very interesting, I added it to my Amazon wishlist and will give it a read. Thanks!

Day 12 5/14/17

PRIMARY: 5+ hours a day of business work for 7 days straight (5/15-5/22)

I noticed a trend in all of your posts. They all have one thing in common.

Earnings: $8
$8= monthly earnings from my marketing company
For almost 2 weeks nothing has changed. I'll tell you what will change, if you don't. Your money your sitting on right now while you watch TV after waking up at 5pm everyday is going to dry up.

My social media marketing company for my one client is basically on autopilot which means basically 0% of my attention goes into worrying about it. I just follow a process for 12 hours a month and stuff gets accomplished with it.
Unless you have sales, you don't have a company. You have a job that pays you $8 a month for 12 hours of work, then "autopilot".

Is your goal to see how many hours a day you can work while still staying at $8?
