IP is something that tends to go completely out of hand. Look at the MPAA and RIAA trying to do everything to stifle new technologies that offer music and movies easier and at a lower premium. Look at the Apple vs. Samsung war, with them just suing each other left and right in many different countries.

Copyright and patent law need serious reform.

That's totally true. A few years ago I read an article about a high tech company (I forgot which one) where the CTO told in an interview that they have been growing to their first billion in revenue without patenting anything at all. After they have been successful they needed to start patenting stuff, not to secure their inventions but to be able to avoid law suits in the sector where competitors would try to stop products and inventions to go to market with patent suits.
