Domain name .co or .com?

I am trying to register a domain name and want to know if it is OK to go with .co instead or .com. I know a lot of other countries use .co but I am afraid that it won't look as credible in the US. Would I get as much traffic with a .co name? Are these unfounded worries? The reason is that the .com name is a premium name (~$3000) vs. the .co name is $14.99/yr. This would also be my first website so I am not too knowledgeable about such things, but I am learning. Thanks.
