I think one of the biggest "sins" in the world is counting someone else's money, and trying to establish their level of philanthropy for them.

Very few things in life drive me as nuts as the "do you need all of that money" question.

Why?

1. For the most part, if you have it you either earned it or someone related to you earned it

2. Outsiders have zero idea how much you give away

3. No matter how much you give away, class envy always demands the answer is "more"

Example. Bill and Melinda Gates. Probably everyone here has at one point or another heard someone talking about how it's "immoral" for someone to have all that money, and that they should give "more" away.

The "more" always has to be qualified by someone asking "Well, do you know how much they currently give away?" The answer to that question is always "No... but..."

Bill and Melinda Gates give away a ton of money. Their foundation is the largest charitable giving organization in the world. Their only external trustee is Warren Buffet. It's been funded with private donations, mostly from Bill and Melinda, with over $30,000,000,000. (yes, thirty billion dollars).

I think questions about someone else's wealth always emanate from a place of envy.

The correct answer is "none of your business."

Interesting, your point certainly has validity imo.
Funny you picked Gates though as most I've listened too actually go the other way and see him as a modern day matr. Though of course your experience may be different.

Let's not also forget it's not as simplistic as giving away a ton of money. Apart from noteriaty certain charitable structures have historically been created to actually gain more control/power/influence.

Vigilante said:

Very few things in life drive me as nuts as the "do you need all of that money" question.

You shouldn't let it drive you nuts (though not always easy I grant you). Anything that falls out of societal norms will be judged and questioned, usually in an uninformed and often ignorant manner. Society is always evolving, so some of these dissolve. Don't expect it anytime soon for this though.

Vigilante said:

I think questions about someone else's wealth always emanate from a place of envy.

I don't agree 100% on that. It could be that, but more often I think it's just human curiousity. At least when I ask or want to know how much someone makes. Like a celebrity for instance or some billionaire tycoon you've heard of in the news.

It's sort of the same as asking someone how tall they are or how old they are, right? It don't necessary mean we're envious of them. I think in most cases not.

I just want to know what Fran Bailey's commission will be on the Trump sale! Wow!

I have been watching out for the sale Le Reve- a French chateau in Winetka (I think) owned by Sherwin Jarol....I read somewhere that it is currently the most expensive piece of residential real estate in the state of IL. I looked at the pictures, I love it soooooo much.

One day I am going to own a spot in the Trump Towers.

Associating wealth with "need" is a bit ridiculous.

I'd rather associate wealth with phrases like:

- "Do you deserve all that money?"
- "Did you earn all that money?"
- "Are you adding value or subtracting value with every extra dollar?"

I don't "need" more money in much the same way that I don't "need" a luxury ring on my finger. But I certainly deserved the money I earned to pay for it.

People without always "need" more than people with, that doesn't mean they deserve it.

Anyone ever heard people talk about how people with rich parents don't deserve their money? I've heard it all too much and I'll be damned if my efforts for a better life don't also forge a better life for my kids. That's the entire point.

My only request from my kids will be to leave their kids with a future just as bright as theirs.
